Virtual reality is one of those technologies that, for older readers at least, was more of a buzzword back in the day. No one was quite prepared for how well it would take off in modern gaming, but the likes of Oculus Quest, PSVR and HTC Vive have shown that there is a future for VR, and that it's implementation in the industry is worth it. The Oculus Quest 2 is about to receive new updates, and so is one of the biggest VR releases of 2021 that runs on it, Resident Evil 4.
According to a recent report from PCGamesN, the VR version of Resident Evil 4 has been enhanced by the developer, which comes with some quality-of-life tweaks to make it more suitable for more players. One of the main focuses of the new update relates to mobility and general accessibility. For example, users will be able to adjust parameters for chest and waist height, and there's an option to remap the movement to suit left-handed controls as well. While there is no new content being added to the game, the general tweaks should make the game better for players and more comfortable in general.
It's possible that this new update is down to Resident Evil 4 VR having design flaws, which made it uncomfortable, largely for female players. Given that some players noticed that items in-game being at chest height were causing discomfort, it's possible that the studio has sought to address issues relating to comfortability, which would explain the new update.
In any case, the quality-of-life improvements will go some way to ensuring that more people can play the game. It is, after all, considered one of the best Resident Evil games in the series, responsible for taking the franchise into a more action-orientated title while still maintaining the horror elements, something which was sadly missing from the fifth and sixth installments as Capcom pushed the series more and more towards high-octane action before the horror was revived with game number seven.
While a Resident Evil 4 fan HD project is in the works, there are many who would love to see an official remake of this now nearly 17-year-old game. For now, though, owners of an Oculus Quest 2 can get to grips with the VR port. And with the new updates being given, it should prove to be as much of a success as it was when it was first launched last October.
