Capcom has released Resident Evil 4 on basically every platform imaginable, and so there was some concern that Resident Evil 4 VR would have a sense of "been there, done that." On the contrary, Resident Evil 4 VR has earned critical acclaim since its release, held up as one of the finest virtual reality game releases of the year and praised as a genuinely new way to experience the classic game. But while Resident Evil 4 VR reviews were highly positive, the game also earned some criticism, namely for its lack of certain game modes.

Resident Evil 4 VR is missing some game modes from previous versions of the game, namely the popular Mercenaries mode, where players try to kill as many enemies as possible within a certain time limit. Mercenaries was a popular mode in the original Resident Evil 4 because it gave fans a way to jump right into the action without having to go back through the entire story, and that seemed like it would be especially important for the VR version.

While Resident Evil 4 VR didn't launch with Mercenaries, it will be getting the mode sooner rather than later. Oculus has confirmed that Resident Evil 4 VR is getting a free update that will officially add The Mercenaries mode to the game. It's unclear exactly how extensive it will be or if it will feature more playable characters besides just Leon S. Kennedy (the original mode had Ada, Hunk, Krauser, and Wesker as options), but fans will find out next year.

Resident Evil 4 VR Mercenaries mode isn't the only thing that's coming to the game next year. Fans can also look forward to new mobility and comfort settings, improved left-hand controls, height adjustments, and a way to "fine-tune the location of your chest and waist inventory." The latter is going to be helpful for some Resident Evil 4 VR players who were hitting themselves in the chest when trying to grab grenades, and will likely be a welcome change.

The addition of the missing Mercenaries mode for Resident Evil 4 VR and the quality of life improvements will no doubt be appreciated by fans, but there's even more missing in this version of the game that could be added. The Assignment and Separate Ways missions are still missing, for example, and would make for great additions to Resident Evil 4 VR, giving the game even more longevity. It's unclear if they will ever come to Resident Evil 4 VR, but at least fans have Mercenaries mode to look forward to.

Resident Evil 4 VR is out now, exclusively for Oculus Quest 2.
