Last year, reports from reliable sources leaked the existence of a Resident Evil 4 remake, which was further corroborated by the Capcom ransomware attack. With Resident Evil 4 widely considered to be one of the best games in the survival-horror franchise and readily available on virtually every modern gaming platform, some were confused as to why Capcom would bother remaking it. However, it seems that Capcom has been planning a Resident Evil 4 remake for even longer than expected.
According to frequent Resident Evil franchise leaker AestheticGamer, the Resident Evil 4 remake has been in development since at least late 2018. They made this claim while pointing out that Capcom had the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes, the still-unannounced Outrage game, Resident Evil Village, and even Resident Evil 9 all in-development at the same time. Now that the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes have been released and Resident Evil Village's launch is right around the corner, it seems Capcom has at least three RE projects still in active development.
The Resident Evil 4 remake is self-explanatory, and fans shouldn't expect any information on Resident Evil 9 for years to come. However, Resident Evil: Outrage, which may very well end up being called Resident Evil: Revelations 3 by the time it's all said and done, may not be quite as well-known. Much of what has been leaked about Resident Evil: Outrage comes from AestheticGamer, who has said that the game will likely be a timed-Switch exclusive that could potentially star Rebecca Chambers. According to the rumors, Resident Evil: Outrage will launch in late 2021 as part of the Resident Evil 25th anniversary celebrations.
As far as the Resident Evil 4 remake goes, previous leaks have suggested that the plan was to release it at some point in 2022. However, there were other reports that suggested the Resident Evil 4 remake development team was swapped from Capcom's M-Two to Capcom Division 1. Apparently, the swap was due to a disagreement about the direction the Resident Evil 4 remake should take, with the M-Two wanting it to be a more faithful remake and Capcom Division 1 looking to take bigger risks. It's believed that this swap will see the game's release date pushed to at least 2023.
None of this has been confirmed by Capcom or any other official sources, so fans should take it all with a grain of salt. As it stands, the Resident Evil 4 remake game has not actually been announced, and with Resident Evil Village not even out yet, it's unlikely that an announcement will come anytime soon. And if the rumored Resident Evil: Outrage is coming between Resident Evil Village and the Resident Evil 4 remake anyway, it may not be until 2022 or even 2023 before fans get confirmation.
With a Resident Evil movie reboot, Resident Evil Village, and various Netflix projects all confirmed for 2021, there is plenty coming to keep fans of the survival-horror franchise busy while they wait for news on the rumored Resident Evil 4 remake.
