Being the sole agent sent to save the president's daughter shows just how much faith the United States government has in Leon S. Kennedy. Despite his short tenure with the organization, Leon was able to harness his skills and prove that he is more than capable of completing such a delicate mission on his own. Even with his training, however, Leon wouldn't get very far without his gear.

The Attache Case is a staple mechanic in Resident Evil 4 and its remake that allows players to manage their inventory. Using a grid system, players can pick up, move, rotate, and set various items that Leon can use throughout his journey. Item management is a core gameplay component of Resident Evil 4, but the addition of the new Storage and Auto-Sort systems trivializes it for those playing the remake.

The Original Resident Evil 4 Had Players Scrambling For Attache Case Space

Looking At The Attache Case In Resident Evil 4

Looking back at 2005's Resident Evil 4, players have no choice but to make do with the available Attache Case space they have. Save for key items and treasures which have dedicated inventory slots, all of Leon's weapons, weapon attachments, ammo, and healing items have to be finely sorted in the Attache Case. Bigger cases can be bought from RE4's Merchant, which allow Leon to store more items with less hassle.

While this mechanic is similar to the one found in the remake, the lack of an Auto-Sort system means that players have to get creative with how they place their items. Weapons that take up a lot of horizontal space in their default orientations (such as the Rifle and Rocket Launcher) can be rotated vertically to make room for other items in the case. Should players use up all their available Attache Case slots, they have to make the difficult decision to either use or discard one of their items to make room for more. Add that to the fact that players have to open the Attache Case to switch weapons mid-combat and there is a certain degree of skill required when sorting items in the original game.

Sorting And Keeping Items In The Resident Evil 4 Remake Is Extremely Easy

Since the Resident Evil 4 remake incorporates modern systems, item management in the new game is much easier. The aforementioned Auto-Sort system is one of the factors behind this ease as players only need to press a single button and the Attache Case will immediately sort its contents in the most efficient way possible. When combined with the new weapon quick swap system, players need to spend even less time looking in their inventory than before.

Another inclusion in the remake that trivializes item management is the Storage system. In addition to saving one's progress, interacting with one of the many Typewriters in the Resident Evil 4 remake allows players to access a universal Storage system much like the ones found in the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes. With it, players can dump certain items like weapons and Healing Sprays to make room in their Attache Case. This way, players can purchase new items while still keeping their beloved weapons - effectively increasing their inventory without sacrificing precious Attache Case space.

While item management doesn't seem like a scary thing, being caught without the proper resources can increase the tension in certain situations. Being forced to choose between valuable Magnum Ammo or a life-preserving Green Herb is one of the many tough decisions players have to make in the original Reisdent Evil 4. Though these scenarios are still present in the remake, the inclusion of a seemingly bottomless Storage container and an automated sorting system make their appearance rarer. The new systems implemented in the Resident Evil 4 remake aren't bad by any means, but they do cheapen one of the core mechanics of the original game.

Resident Evil 4 remake is available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
