The remake of Resident Evil 4 hit store shelves and digital storefronts worldwide in late March. The game was well-received by critics and was one of the fastest-selling games in the franchise, having moved over 4.5 million copies worldwide in just a couple of weeks. The Resident Evil 4 remake would feature many differences from the original, but one of its biggest was a bit more subtle.

Early on, it was clear Resident Evil 4 remake would be different from the original. One of the most significant changes in the Resident Evil 4 remake involved the backstory of Luis Serra. His backstory is significantly darker in the new game. Perhaps one of the most shocking alterations to his story, however, was the fact that he worked on the Nemesis bioweapon that was featured in the Resident Evil 3 remake.

Las Plagas' Unexpected Resident Evil 3 Nemesis Connection

Resident Evil 4 T-Virus Las Plagas Nemesis

One of the more surprising details in the remake of Resident Evil 3 was how it connected to the Plagas from Resident Evil 4. When the Resident Evil 3 remake demo was released players noticed that Nemesis infected other zombies with some kind of parasite. This new parasite looked suspiciously similar to the one found in the original Resident Evil 4. As it turned out, this was intentional.

In a 2020 interview, Resident Evil 3 remake director Kiyohiko Sakata revealed the backstory behind this new parasite. In this new remake continuity, the company created a lab-grown parasite that was based on Las Plagas. This new creature was what eventually gave Nemesis life and allowed the company to control the creature as it hunted down members of STARS. Furthermore, it was revealed that Umbrella Europe was the branch that actually completed the project. This is where Luis Serra bridges the gap between installments.

How Luis Serra Connects to Nemesis In Resident Evil 4

Luis Sera

Luis Serra has a much darker backstory in the Resident Evil 4 remake; in the original game, his backstory and motivations were a bit ambiguous. One of the key differences in the remake is that he worked for Umbrella before the events of the game and was mostly acting for protection and maybe to right some of his wrongs. As it turned out, one of his wrongs might have been one of the biggest enemies of the franchise.

In Resident Evil 4's Chapter 15, players will make their way to Luis Serra's lab where they can get a better idea of whom the character was before he died. Various records and pictures will reveal what Luis was doing for antagonist Lord Saddler and a bit of info on his past with Umbrella. There isn't a lot of information on his time with the company, but a single photo can be found with a number of his fellow scientists holding a banner with the company logo on it.

The banner specifically says Europe Laboratory 6 Dream Team, which was not only the division that handled Nemesis but the very lab that worked on the project as well. In other words, in addition to his work on Las Plagas, Luis Serra also helped create Nemesis.

This revelation doesn't change much in the grand scheme of things because the connection doesn't really come up in the story itself. Likewise, the overarching story of Resident Evil can be a little difficult to follow since the games have been made over a nearly thirty-year period, and not always with linear continuities in mind. The remakes seem to be trying to streamline the more convoluted aspects of the franchise, which includes giving the fourth game a closer connection to the rest of the series lore. In this particular instance, it bridged the gap further between Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4.

Resident Evil 4 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
