One Resident Evil on 3DS Isn't Enough, Introducing 'Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D'

Resident Evil The Mercenaries 3D

We've all known that Resident Evil would be appearing on the 3DS since E3, and everyone here at Game Rant was giddy with anticipation after seeing the trailer and screenshots. You'd think that Capcom would only release one game for the time being, but I guess you thought wrong. Capcom announced today that Resident Evil: Revelations wouldn't be the only RE game on Nintendo's highly anticipated 3DS, but it will instead be one of two.

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D is exactly what it sounds like. Based off of Resident Evil 5's 'Mercenary Mode' the game puts players through a variety of mercenary missions from Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5. The objective of the game is to clear out as many enemies as possible within each level before your time (or you) expires. It's basically the exact same thing from RE5, but with new levels and new characters. The playable additions will be "well known characters", so we could potentially see the first ever pairing of Chris Redfield and Leon Kennedy... finally!

The game will also feature online co-op for friends who are unable to sit in the same room together, allowing them to still be able to kick some infected butt. There is still no news on how many players Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D will support, but keep your fingers crossed for four player co-op. Hopefully getting into games doesn't involve punching in a 12 digit friend-code and resembles something more like a 'Friends List'.

Screenshots have been released showing off the game's incredible graphics and familiar levels. You can check some of them out in the gallery below.

Is it just me or does that guy with the gas mask look like one of the Helghast soldiers from Killzone? Whatever he is, he looks pretty awesome. The graphics are fantastic for a handheld, but that's to be expected from anything on Nintendo's 3DS.

The game looks fun and I'm sure those who loved the original mode will enjoy this as well, but I can't help but feel a little confused on how Capcom can repackage a mode from an older game in the series and sell it as its own game. The only difference appears to be new levels and characters, which is awesome mind you, but it could have just been added as a bonus feature to the other Resident Evil game that is already coming out on the system.

Regardless, the game should provide a decent time when we finally get our hands on it. Game Rant will keep you posted on any news regarding Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D as soon as it becomes available.

What do you guys think of a second RE game hitting the 3DS? What playable characters would you like to see make an appearance?
