It's no secret that both the original and remake of Resident Evil 3 are somewhat more focused on action, and a recent fan video shows what happens if the game becomes more like a Capcom equivalent of Dark Souls or Bloodborne. Given the releases so far, 2023 has definitely been a good year for horror games, especially when it comes to remakes. The genre is thriving at the moment, even if a lot of titles coming out lately are more about revisiting classics than bringing something truly new.

While Resident Evil 3 is one of the shortest games in the series, it's still a solid entry in what has become one of the most influential survival horror franchises ever. The original RE3 from 1999 still had all the DNA of its successful predecessors, but the introduction of Nemesis, not to mention a slight lean towards action, was a sign of things to come in subsequent installments. As such, the third game is still a classic, even if the remake was a slight letdown for some.

However, someone has decided to make a few changes to Resident Evil 3, turning it into a different beast entirely. As spotted by DSO Gaming, the YouTube channel Rustic Games BR has released a video showing what RE3 would look like if it was more of a Soulsborne game. The footage shows Jill Valentine slowly pushing a large iron gate open before entering an ominous courtyard. As soon as she enters, a cut scene begins in which the aforementioned Nemesis emerges. The fight that commences looks like it came straight from a FromSoftware title, complete with a red enemy health bar and orchestral music. It should be noted that this is just a concept video and does not represent any official or fan-made project that's currently in development.

Still, it's a fun piece of footage, and it's definitely not the first time Rustic has done something like this. In the past, they've shown what horror games like Dead Space would look like as a PS1-style demake, as well as a concept that imagines RE4 as a Souls-like game.

While it's not considered the best Resident Evil game ever — that honor typically goes to the fourth installment — RE3 is still an important part of the franchise's history. It may be short, but it keeps the spirit of the series alive, securing itself as a celebrated contribution to the nostalgic days of 90s survival horror.

Resident Evil 3 Remake is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S
