During Sony's most recent State of Play event, the long-rumored Resident Evil 3 remake was finally announced. The game was shown off with a new trailer that highlighted some of the characters that will be featured in the story, and teased the threat of the Nemesis monster. However, there was some other interesting information revealed about Resident Evil 3 during the State of Play, mainly that the game is one in the same with "Project Resistance," which is now known as Resident Evil: Resistance.

A few months ago, Capcom revealed the Project Resistance multiplayer Resident Evil game, which features asymmetric gameplay and some popular characters like the Mr. X tyrant. Fans were disappointed when they realized it wasn't a new Resident Evil Outbreak, and it not being the rumored Resident Evil 3 remake was also met with some backlash. However, it's been revealed that Project Resistance is merely the multiplayer component for Resident Evil 3 remake.

This means that Resident Evil 3 not only has a campaign for players to go through, but a full-fledged asymmetric multiplayer mode as well that features its own selection of brand new playable characters. This should go a long way in boosting the replay value of Resident Evil 3, especially if the game retains some of the other bonus game modes that were present in the original release.

Similarly to Resident Evil 2, the original version of Resident Evil 3 featured a bonus game mode that players could unlock by finishing the game. In Resident Evil 3, it's The Mercenaries: Operation Mad Jackal, which puts players in the role of an Umbrella operative who has to escape Raccoon City. Since Resident Evil 2 retained all of the major bonus content from its original release, it would be surprising for Capcom to shortchange fans when it comes to Resident Evil 3.

Resident Evil 3 won't be at The Game Awards 2019, so it's unclear at this point when more information on the game will become available. However, with the Resident Evil 3 remake release date set for April 3, 2020, Capcom only has four more months to reveal more about the game, so fans should expect new information sooner rather than later.

Resident Evil 3 will launch on April 3, 2020 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
