Capcom has confirmed that the Resident Evil 3 Remake will not include the original's Mercenaries mode. Players will have to be content with Resident Evil 3 Remake's campaign, as well as the asymmetric multiplayer mode Resident Evil Resistance instead.

The Mercenaries is a mini-game mode that grew into a substantially larger side-mode across several games. The version in Resident Evil 6 had players killing enemies across several stages while trying to accrue high scores for the leaderboard. However, in Resident Evil 3 the mode was much simpler, with just a single level and limited character options.

The decision not to include a version of The Mercenaries almost certainly is due to the addition of Resident Evil Resistance, though Capcom hasn't said that specifically. Given the scope of Resident Evil Resistance, the mode likely required a substantial investment of development resources. It'd likely push Capcom beyond itself to try and include The Mercenaries in addition to Resistance.

Resident Evil 3 Remake players should be more than happy with Resident Evil Resistance, even without The Mercenaries. Resident Evil 3 is bundled with Resistance, so buyers get both in one package. Resistance will offer a distinct multiplayer experience with 1v4 asymmetric multiplayer. The one player takes on the role of Mastermind, setting traps and sending undead after the group of four Survivors. If the Survivors can complete objectives and make it out alive they win.

Players will ultimately have to decide for themselves whether or not Resident Evil Resistance will be an adequate replacement for The Mercenaries. As fun as multiplayer can be, there's unique value in a standalone non-competitive mode. Of course, everyone will also have access to the full Resident Evil 3 Remake, as well. Going by Resident Evil 2 Remake standards, Resident Evil 3 Remake should appease just about every likely buyer. The rest will just be the icing on the cake.

Resident Evil 3 Remake releases April 3 on PS4 and Xbox One.
