The Resident Evil franchise has been responsible for some iconic games in the survival-horror genre. With an enduring legacy, the titles have picked up an unusual set of expectations, and one of them is the ability to beat the games without firing any bullets. This is a challenge for players with a thorough knowledge of the games, and it seems that the remaster of Resident Evil 3 will allow players to continue this difficult playing style after it was thrown into some doubt by a previous entry.

Despite the critical acclaim received by the remake of Resident Evil 2, some players were annoyed that knives were breakable and therefore gunfire was unavoidable in a playthrough. While this may have only been an issue for the more dedicated players, it seems to be one that the developer, Capcom, has listened to and rectified for the highly anticipated Resident Evil 3 remake.

Producer of Resident Evil 3, Peter Fabiano, has discussed the issue of breakable knives, "We kept the knife inexhaustible [in Resident Evil 3], so you can use it forever", he continued "We're dealing with survival horror and everything is exhaustible. You run out of bullets. You run out of herbs. You run out of all the items you can use. So if you did run out of everything, what would you have? The knife. The director always wanted to make it so that you at least have your trusty knife. That’s always something you can rely on." This will be a huge relief to fans who want to challenge themselves against some of the scariest monsters in the Resident Evil franchise.

Resident Evil can be completed with a knife

Some fans may feel that their knowledge of the original Resident Evil 3 will allow them to achieve a playthrough with no guns with ease, yet the Resident Evil 3 remake allows players to navigate more of Racoon City. This change is undoubtedly to provide a new experience for players and make the game meet contemporary expectations, as the original was a short game by PlayStation 1 standards.

With a far more impressive map in the remake of Resident Evil 3 and a variety of new features, it looks like the title will build on its source material. With new features, there are naturally questions about the integrity of the game remaining intact and including a fan-favorite challenge will undoubtedly ease concerns. With the release date quickly approaching for Resident Evil 3, many will be excited to see the new features in the game and will hope to work their way up to a playthrough without any ammunition. Other players will likely relish the opportunity to shoot through monsters.

Resident Evil 3 is scheduled to release on April 3, 2020, for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
