With the success of both the series' most recent canonical title and the most recent mainline remake, it's a good time to be a fan of Resident Evil. As speculations abound about Resident Evil 8, more details are emerging about the remake of Resident Evil 3, some of which will send shivers of both excitement and fear down player's spines.

After the massive success of the Resident Evil 2 remake, the news of a remake of Resident Evil 3 was met with thunderous approval, and every detail provides another window into what terrors will be returning and which will not. The most important monster, however, was one that everyone knew would be in the game from the moment it was announced: Nemesis.

Nemesis has traditionally been one of the most iconic and terrifying Resident Evil monsters ever created, but that position was challenged fairly recently, as the Resident Evil 2 remake's Tyrant, also known as Mr. X, stomped his way into the nightmares of players everywhere. As scary as he was, how could Nemesis compete with the silent, trench coat sporting juggernaut that helped make the Resident Evil 2 remake such a hit? According to Resident Evil 3 remake producer Peter Fabiano, Nemesis is set to be even scarier than Mr. X, designed to put them on edge in a way the Tyrant never could. After all, Mr. X may be implacable in his pursuit, but he cannot attack long distance the way screenshots have revealed Nemesis attacking.

One of the scarier aspects of Nemesis will be his intelligence, something displayed by few non-human enemies in the Resident Evil series. This translates to, first and foremost, an improved AI that will see Nemesis roam through the expanded world of Raccoon City, stalking the player wherever they go in a system built as a direct improvement of Mr. X's behavior. On top of that and his long-rang tentacles, Nemesis is set to use weapons against the player as well, perhaps expanding his repetoire from a single rocket launcher, although that is terrifying enough on its own.

Nemesis is one aspect of Resident Evil 3 that everyone is glad to see make an updated comeback, but other details of the game are still up in the air. While some old enemies have been confirmed as returning, other details of what will return have been left in the dark.

The rapid, parallel development of these Resident Evil remakes may be viewed with cynicism by some, especially any who have grown weary of remakes of their favorite films swarming the silver screen. Video game remakes, however, are often a chance for players who have never experienced the original to get in on the fun, and with Resident Evil 3 set to terrify and delight once again, it's worth thinking about other classics that deserve a remake.

Resident Evil 3 will be available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on April 3
