With Capcom's announcement of Resident Evil 3 last week, 2020 looks to be quite a year for both the company and fans of the franchise. The remake of the original 1999 game brings back fan-favorite protagonist Jill Valentine and perhaps an even more iconic villain, Nemesis, who has some new tricks up its sleeve.

Set to release on April 3rd next year, the survival horror game remasters Jill's escape from Raccoon City in glorious high-definition on the RE Engine also used for the prequel remake. Players will fight through hordes of zombies and the intelligent bio-weapon, Nemesis, which hunts Jill and other S.T.A.R.S. members throughout the story. But Nemesis, who only used a rocket-propelled grenade in the original game, seems to have acquired some new toys to use on the survivors.

In-universe, the Nemesis T-Type is a Tyrant 103 clone like Mr. X from the previous game. However, the body has been implanted and taken over by a parasite, creating a bio-weapon with the strength and intelligence of previous versions, but being able to use weapons such as firearms. Upgraded to today's standards, Nemesis sports a frightening new design but isn't wielding the rocket launcher that veteran players have come to know and fear in promotional art. Instead, Nemesis is equipped with what seems to be a flamethrower-type weapon, shooting fire like the apocalypse enveloping Raccoon City.

On Twitter, Where's Barry points at one blurry detail on an official image of Nemesis released by Capcom. There is a small circular object near the base of the weapon, which looks similar to the valves on oxygen, carbon, and liquid nitrogen gas tanks. This confirms that Nemesis is using a flamethrower but also supports the theory that Nemesis will be able to switch between its RPG, flamethrower, or other unseen weapons throughout the story. This can only mean trouble for Jill and players as they will be forced to confront the bio-weapon and its new arsenal in unfamiliar situations.

To Capcom's credit, Nemesis is shaping up to be quite the threat in the Resident Evil 3 remake. After the popularity of Mr. X exploded with the Resident Evil 2 remake, it seems the creative team set out to make Nemesis' return to the series just as iconic. And on next year's release, it will surely be remembered for relentlessly pursuing Jill in-game and its frightening interactions with the rest of the characters.

In the end, the reveal that Nemesis will not be carrying his old rocket launcher all the time is sure to dishearten some players. However, even a faithful adaptation needs to bring something new to the table, and Nemesis is set to do just that next Spring.

Resident Evil 3 launches on April 3, 2020 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
