Resident Evil 2: How to Get S Rank and Unlock Infinite Ammo

Like past games in the Resident Evil series, Resident Evil 2 tracks a variety of stats as players go through the game, and then displays those stats to them at the end of a playthrough, complete with a letter grade to determine how well they did. Since there are achievements/trophies and unlockables tied to getting the highest rank possible, S rank, Resident Evil 2 players may want to know which stats count toward their grade.

As it turns out, getting an S rank in Resident Evil 2 is just a matter of completing a playthrough as fast as possible. Other stats that are tracked and influenced grades in previous games, like the number of times players saved for instance, aren't taken into consideration. However, the time limit changes depending on which scenario is being played and the difficulty setting.

  • Scenario A (Standard) - Within 3.5 hours
  • Scenario B (Standard) - Within 3 hours
  • Scenario A (Hardcore) - Within 2.5 hours
  • Scenario B (Hardcore) - Within 2 hours

To get the achievements/trophies tied to S rank, players need to get an S rank in Leon's A scenario and Claire's A scenario (it may be possible unlock by getting S rank in Claire B and Leon B as well, but we were unable to test that at the time of writing). Playing through the B scenarios isn't necessary to get the Leon "S." Kennedy and Sizzling Scarlet Hero achievements/trophies.

Getting an S rank is worth it for more than just achievements and trophies, though. Getting S rank is how Resident Evil 2 players can get infinite ammo in the game for specific weapons. Getting S rank on Standard difficulty will unlock the Samurai Edge pistol with infinite ammo, whereas getting S rank on Hardcore difficulty will unlock the LE 5 submachine gun with infinite ammo.

Even after they've conquered all of the campaigns for Leon and Claire, Resident Evil 2 players will still have other challenge to complete, like beating HUNK's The 4th Survivor scenario, which will likely prove to be one of the more challenging modes in the game.

Resident Evil 2 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
