Resident Evil 2 was considered a survival horror masterpiece for its time, but players who survived the harrowing challenges would unlock a special character, Tofu, which provided the game with a sillier twist after all the scares the game had to offer. Now, that beloved character is making a comeback in Resident Evil 2's upcoming remake.

Capcom has officially confirmed that Tofu will be playable in the Resident Evil 2 remake, but the developer also revealed even more details that are likely to please fans of the original: Tofu will not be sold as DLC, and its playable route will be available in the base game. Instead of coughing up extra cash to access the character, players will instead be able to unlock the ability to play through Raccoon City's zombie-infested streets and sewers as the giant block of soy, just like in the original game.

Tofu was originally added to the first iteration of Resident Evil 2 as a bit of a joke by its developers. Initially, the block was simply there as a placeholder for the developers to test the game's collision detection. Ultimately, the block was left in as a playable route that could be unlocked after beating Claire and Leon's playthroughs, as well as secret character Hunk's. Tofu created a significant enough lasting impression on the gaming community that it appeared years later in Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles as a secret enemy, and fans have been waiting to see how Tofu would be incorporated into the game since Resident Evil 2's reveal trailer at E3 last year.

Fans of Resident Evil have been waiting for this remake with bated breath, and the recent demo shows it, with over 1 million players checking it out thus far. Although the true verdict from the fans will come only once the game is officially released, it's looking so far as though Capcom has truly made an effort to please both newcomers and those who remember the original Resident Evil 2 experience with fondness, playable Tofu and all.

Resident Evil 2 is set to release on January 25 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
