Expectant Capcom fans still have some time to wait until the Resident Evil 2 remake is ready to play, but luckily, the developer is helping to keep fans satisfied with frequent gameplay reveals. Producer Tsuyoshi Kanda sat down to play through Resident Evil 2 at Ani-Com & Games Hong Kong, showing off the game's dark, claustrophobic atmosphere and shocking scenes inside the Raccoon City Police Station.

The 16 minutes of gameplay, seen below, starts series protagonist Leon S. Kennedy out within the police station's lobby. The footage shows Leon making his way through the police station with several close encounters and plenty of gore while dismembering zombies and attempting to rescue fellow cops that were caught during the worst of the outbreak.

Capcom appears to be doing an excellent job of recreating the tension and anxiety that permeated the early Resident Evil entries. The scenery strongly resembles the original Resident Evil 2, but with the modern day coat of polish that one would expect from today's current gaming systems. In many areas, the lighting is minimalist enough that the player can hardly see what's outside the circle of their flashlight, making tension rise as they slowly make their way through claustrophobic, crowded areas.

As previously revealed, the new Resident Evil 2 story deviates some from the original. Fellow officer Marvin Branagh has a bit more insight to offer this time around, and offers up his combat knife before Leon moves on. Branagh's knife is a welcome addition for combat, as it can be used to free Leon from zombie attacks. Since Leon is initially only equipped with a  handgun and the police station's shotgun kept under lock and key, players will likely have to rely on this knife more than once.

Capcom appears to have done what was often considered impossible and has recreated a survival horror classic with a modern control scheme. Though a final release will be needed to determine if it can make good on its promises, it looks like long-time Resident Evil fans will get what they've been dreaming of when the Resident Evil 2 remake releases next year.

Resident Evil 2 releases for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on January 25, 2019.
