After years in development, Capcom finally pulled the curtain back on the Resident Evil 2 remake at E3 2018. The trailers and gameplay footage that have been released since then have answered a lot of questions fans may have had about the game, but they failed to address whether or not the Resident Evil 2 remake will bring back some of the more obscure characters, like Umbrella operative HUNK and Tofu. However, Capcom has since confirmed that both HUNK and Tofu, as well as their respective game modes, will be returning for the remake.

For the uninitiated, players can unlock special game modes called The Fourth Survivor and The Tofu Survivor in the original Resident Evil 2 by completing certain conditions. These game modes star HUNK and Tofu respectively, with the former being a mysterious Umbrella operative and the latter being a large, walking piece oftTofu. It remains to be seen what conditions will need to be met in the Resident Evil 2 remake to unlock these modes, but that should come to light once the game is actually released.

By bringing back HUNK and Tofu, Capcom is showing its willingness to pay homage to the original Resident Evil 2 while also changing some things to better appeal to modern gamers. Perhaps the biggest change is the switch to an over-the-shoulder camera, like the one used in Resident Evil 4, as opposed to the fixed camera angles seen in the PS1-era Resident Evil games.

Some may be worried that the over-the-shoulder camera may make the game feel too different to the original Resident Evil 2, but the trailers indicate that the remake is going to be very faithful to the original. The trailers confirm that both Claire Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy are returning as the main playable characters, and they will have to deal with returning monsters like the lickers, Mr. X, zombies, and more.

For the most part, it seems as though the Resident Evil 2 remake will be delivering an experience that aims to please returning fans and new fans alike. It will be exciting to see if it lives up to expectations when it launches early next year.

Resident Evil 2 will launch on January 25, 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
