Without a doubt, plenty of Resident Evil 2 fans are eagerly anticipating the day when they can get their hands on a copy of the forthcoming survival-horror title, especially since it was recently declared the Best of Show at E3 2018. With this being the case, players are definitely excited to see what Capcom has changed from the original and how its iconic characters and locations will be translated to current-gen hardware, but the publisher and developer isn't explicitly calling the project a remake.

This much comes from Capcom's Brand Manager, Mike Lunn, who recently stated that since there will be content added on top of the foundation laid by the original version, as well as assets that will be altered and changed around to make the game a different experience from the first Resident Evil 2, the company decided not to officially call it a remake. According to Lunn, “It won’t be faithful one to one," as Capcom "wanted it to feel fresh".

"For someone that’s played the game, some people played it once and some people played it a thousand times because it’s their favorite game. For the people that have even played it a thousand times, we wanted it to feel fresh. That’s why we don’t call it Resident Evil 2 Remake. It’s a new game built on top of the foundation.”

In order to give potential players a clearer vision of the type of project Capcom is attempting to execute with the new Resident Evil 2 game coming for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, Lunn provides the example of how a well known moment in the 1998 release differs from the new game. To be specific, many will likely recall the part where one's moving through the police station, and a lurker can be seen walking by a window. As the Capcom Brand Manager explains, "In the original game that happens every single time," but it won't be included in the updated RE2 for 2019.

"We don’t include that because of the jumpscares, the puzzles, and because we want you to be challenged by that stuff. We want you to be scared by that stuff, not just repositioned to a new part of the building, but sort of reimagined. Because we don’t want you to know exactly how the puzzles are solved, we don’t want you to know exactly where the enemies are going to be. We want to surprise you. So, we have changed things a bit. But on the whole, the main idea, the main arcs of the story are very similar. But there are going to be some new surprises in there as well."

Taking all of this into consideration, it will be interesting to see what else Capcom is planning to do with the story, gameplay, and assets of Resident Evil 2 in order to make it stand out as a title that isn't just a remake of the original. While such features like the original game's memorable Alligator boss fight will be returning, it and other reappearing content likely won't be exactly the same as players remember from the 1998 version.

Resident Evil 2 is scheduled to release on January 25, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
