With Capcom's newly released remake of Resident Evil 2, fans have been treated to an updated version of Mr. X, the trench coat wearing Tyrant that was first introduced in the original title from 1998. While some players may find avoiding death at the hands of this biologically engineered soldier hard enough, a speed runner has recently encountered a glitch that makes matters so much worse.

While making attempts at S+ Hardcore Difficulty runs, YouTuber BeastGamingHD "heard a weird number of Mr. X footsteps" and decided to investigate. After leading the Tyrant on an extended chase, the source of the strange audio was revealed: two Mr. Xs had, in fact, invaded the speed runner's game.

"If you thought one Mr. X is scary, try dealing with two of them," BeastGamingHD writes in the description of a YouTube video depicting the encounter. "Footsteps everywhere, heart BPM through the roof."

Indeed, Mr. X is a powerful force bent on taking down Resident Evil 2's protagonists, and the fact that it can only be temporarily waylaid for most of the game's duration, as opposed to being outright killable, can make every encounter with the Tyrant quite intense. For some players, this level of intensity is one of the game's primary appeals, and that appears to be the case for BeastGamingHD, who goes on to thank Capcom for "this wonderful bug and experience."

This note of appreciation comes despite the fact that the glitch was encountered during a run that was on track to finish with a strong time. Specifically, the runner indicates that the final time would have been less than 70 minutes, and they had their sights set on the 50 minute mark. This would have put the run in competition with some of the game's fastest finishes, as reported by sites like Speedrun.com.

Of course, getting a record breaking time is the goal of many speed runners, but getting the opportunity to watch BeastGamingHD unload on not one but two Mr. Xs may just make up for the lost run. It certainly seems that the runner is happy to have come across this bizarre glitch — a testament to just how much pleasure some players are finding in Resident Evil 2.

Resident Evil 2 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
