One of the toughest challenges in Resident Evil 2 is earning the elusive S rank, which requires players to complete the game in record time to unlock some infinite ammo weapons. Initially, it was believed that earning S rank was the last thing for players to do, but it's now been discovered that there is an S+ rank with its own rules and special unlocks tied to it.

S+ rank in Resident Evil 2 isn't going to be easy to earn. Not only do players have to beat the game extremely fast, but there are some other requirements thrown in the mix as well to make the entire thing even more stressful. First, here are the new time limits that Resident Evil 2 players must abide by if they hope to unlock S+ rank:

  • Scenario A - 2.5 hours
  • Scenario B - 2 hours

Additionally, Resident Evil 2 players can only save their game three times or less if they hope to unlock S+ rank. Some reports claim players are also unable to use any of the infinite ammo weapons they may have unlocked by completing S rank (others have disputed this restriction), with the exception of the unbreakable combat knife. The unbreakable combat knife, for the uninitiated, is unlocked by destroying all the Mr. Raccoon toys hidden around the game world. And it will make one's life much easier when going for S+ rank, so we highly recommend taking the time to unlock it.

Other requirements are still being verified at the time of this writing. For example, it's unknown how first-aid spray use factors into the S+ ranking, but it does seem to have an impact on one's score. For this reason, we recommend any Resident Evil 2 players going for the S+ rank limit their use of first-aid sprays as much as possible, though an exact number limit has yet to be discovered.

If Resident Evil 2 players manage to complete Leon's campaign on Standard difficulty with an S+ rank, they will unlock the ATM-4 rocket launcher with infinite ammo. And if they manage to complete Claire's campaign on Hardcore with an S+ rank, they will unlock a minigun with infinite ammo. So while it may be an extremely challenging task, it will likely be worth it for completionists and those who want the best firepower in the game.

Resident Evil 2 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
