Resident Evil 2 remake has been out for a few days now to the delight of fans and critics, with the game having received stellar reviews. Although the remake remained mostly faithful to the 1998 classic, Capcom took the risk of omitting fixed camera angles, a feature that defined the classic era of RE games. Still, this did not stop some from wondering what the shiny new remake could look like if Capcom decided to retain the classic format.

In a video posted by YouTube channel Enveloping Sounds, the modder showed a concept video of Resident Evil 2 remake with fixed camera angles. The footage is believed to have been captured using a mod that allowed the player to manipulate the game’s camera, simulating a fixed camera perspective. Of course, given that the remake was made using the over-the-shoulder point of view, transforming it to the traditional angle could result in several problems.

The most apparent conflict would be from the game’s aiming system. In retro Resident Evil games, players could engage in combat via the auto-aim feature. Of course, players can still disable this feature and manually aim their weapon to the enemy, but they are unable to target specific spots, which is not a problem in the original given that enemies are killed depending on the gun and the number of bullets used.

On the other hand, while assisted aiming is available in the latest Resident Evil 2, the remake requires players to target specific weak points in some enemies to effectively kill them. Zombies, for example, cannot be killed unless the player decimates its head. Given this, a fixed camera perspective in the remake would make combat difficult, unless the mod would also change the way enemies are killed.

Another problem that could arise from using a fixed camera perspective in the Resident Evil 2 remake would be from the game’s environment. Most locations in the game are almost pitch black, given that they were designed with the over-the-shoulder perspective in mind. Reverting the game to a fixed-camera view would mean that some environment details would be difficult to see. Nevertheless, veteran players would surely find the mod concept a perfect throwback to what made Resident Evil the beloved franchise we know today.

While removing fixed camera angles is a bold move on Capcom’s part, some fans hoped that a hidden fixed camera mode would be available in the game to players who achieved a high ranking. At the moment, several players already reached an S rank in the remake that unlocked unlimited ammo, but the rumored mode is still yet to be seen.

Resident Evil 2 remake is available now for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
