The latest re-imagining of the survival-horror classic Resident Evil 2 has proven to be a hit worldwide now that an official sales figure for its first week is released by Capcom. The publisher and developer announced via a press release today that the Resident Evil 2 remake has managed to push out a total of 3 million units sold for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

As a comparison, the original Resident Evil 2 had a lifetime sales of 4.96 million, which means that the remake is well on its way to beat this milestone. Moreover, the entire Resident Evil franchise as a whole was able to sell a total of 88 million units worldwide ever since the series debuted back in 1996, making it the most profitable franchise in Capcom’s history.

The overwhelming support by long-time fans of the Resident Evil series is evident in the sales figure of the remake. As it stands today, the Resident Evil 2 remake already outperformed the worldwide first week sales of Resident Evil 7, the latest entry in the main series, that was only able to sell 2.5 million units in its first week back in 2017. Given that both games have survival-horror in its core, it seems that these numbers reveal that the Resident Evil community favors the classic horror theme.

The apparent success of the Resident Evil 2 remake is also a clear indicator that most fans of the series are hungry for the nostalgic tone of classic Resident Evil games. The biggest question now is whether Capcom plans to also do a makeover to other popular games in the series. Luckily, fans won't have to wonder for too long now that Capcom announced a few days ago that if the latest remake sells well, and if most fans ask for it, a remake of Resident Evil 3 is inevitable.

As the Resident Evil 2 remake climbs the sales charts, the game is still receiving tons of resounding praise from both players and critics alike.
