This is it. With the mega-multi-platform release of Madden NFL 11, the briefest summer game lull in modern history has suddenly come to an end.

For years, Madden’s release has served as the starting gun for games publishers, who will spend the last of the Summer and all of the Fall racing toward that most revered of retail holidays: Black Friday.

So bring it on, publishers. Bring. It. On. And on that note, have a look at the new releases for August 8 through 14, 2010, broken out by platform and date.

Madden’s all out assault on the end zone of retail shelf space simply will not be denied. Have you got a game system – any game system? Would you like to play some football? Yes? Done! After all, Madden NFL 11 is the only game in town. If you need some perspective before picking up a copy, be sure to read Game Rant’s Madden demo impressions.

At the absolute opposite end of the videogame spectrum in pretty much every way imaginable, the retro-style beat-em-up that is Scott Pilgrim vs. the World hits PSN this week. The game promises to be refreshingly free from anything that could be considered cutting edge, but is slavishly devoted to recreating both the gameplay of the past and the art style of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s comic. Have a look at the game’s trailer to see what I mean. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World may be coming from über-publisher Ubisoft, but it looks indie-cool.

As always, we want to hear from you. What games will you be bringing home this week? Any titles on the horizon that you’re looking forward to?
