Former President and COO at Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aime is one of the most recognizable names in the games industry, and many people were disappointed to learn about his retirement from the company in 2019. After 13 years heading the North American division of the Japanese gaming giant, the Bronx native almost seemed to be a permanent feature of Nintendo.

The businessman did not disappear entirely from the gaming industry upon his retirement, however. Fils-Aime has continued to present at The Game Awards each year, having participated in the annual event since its creation in 2015. Less than a year after leaving Nintendo, GameStop announced that Fils-Aime would be joining its Board of Directors, a position which he held until June 2021. He also teamed up with video games journalist Harold Goldberg in April 2020 to co-host a seven-episode podcast called “Talking Games,” whose goal was to raise funds to mentor low-income New York City students impacted by the pandemic.

In July 2021, Fils-Aime announced that he would be writing a book called Disrupting the Game: From the Bronx to the Top of Nintendo. The book will discuss the lessons Fils-Aime learned being the son of Haitian immigrants and the leadership style that helped him prolong Nintendo’s success. Fils-Aime has revealed the cover of Disrupting the Game via his Twitter account and also shared the book’s new release date of May 3, 2022. It will retail for $27.99 on Amazon, and a less expensive digital version will be available for purchase as well.

The blurb for Disrupting the Game on Amazon begins: “Gaming legend and boss level disruptor Reggie Fils-Aimé, retired President and Chief Operating Officer of Nintendo of America Inc., shares leadership lessons and inspiring stories from his unlikely rise to the top.” It clarifies that Fils-Aime will cover more than his time at Nintendo, as the book is meant to help others grow within their own industry, bring innovative ideas to their team, and make life choices that will lead to happiness.

The blurb also mentions how Fils-Aime opened Nintendo’s 2004 E3 presentation with the memorable quote, “My name is Reggie. I'm about kicking ass, I'm about taking names, and we're about making games.” Throughout his years at Nintendo, first as Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing and later as President and COO in North America, Fils-Aime made a number of memorable statements that are quoted by others to this day.

In addition to authoring a new book, Reggie Fils-Aime also recently participated in a roundtable called “Xbox Pioneers: Creativity & Innovation.” A former leader from Nintendo hosting an Xbox presentation was a surprise to many, as was a statement by Fils-Aime praising the Xbox, saying that the industry was in a better place thanks to Microsoft's consoles.
