WARNING: Spoilers for Redfall AheadIn a game featuring lore already overflowing with terrifying tales of unspeakable depravity, the sinister series of events leading to the ascendance of Redfall’s Miss Whisper stands out as some of the most disturbing. Whereas the evil acts of the other Vampire Gods in the Arkane Studios shooter were largely restricted to themselves and those in their immediate vicinity, Miss Whisper’s rise to power is a story of unchecked lust for power and malevolent medical malpractice. Uncovering her bloody secrets shows the terrifying outcomes that can arise when those who were once healers direct their talents, instead, toward harm.

Players are introduced to the menacing Vampire God as they exit the tunnel leading to Redfall’s Burial Point map. Suddenly confronted with a dense fog bank and the taunting voice of Miss Whisper, a confusing maze of doors blocks players’ progression until the spirit of Aevum Therapeutics founder Charles Beck appears to point the way forward. Staying largely out of sight for some time after having her initial attempts at obfuscation thwarted by Beck’s ghost, details about Miss Whisper’s troubling past are soon unearthed thanks to surveillance reports stolen from the Bellwether mercenaries sent to retrieve Aevum’s research.

Redfall’s Relaxing Retreat Becomes a Place of Evil

Aevum co-founder Dr. Young from Redfall

By brutally torturing captured cultists who had come under the Vampire God’s sway, the Bellwether mercenaries learned that the bloodthirsty Miss Whisper had been Aevum co-founder Dr. Alice Young in her mortal life. The head of the Twintree Wellness and Recovery Center in the Burial Point Woods, a high-end substance abuse treatment facility whose fliers can be found scattered all throughout Redfall’s two maps, Dr. Young had begun conducting wildly unethical experiments on her patients at Aevum’s behest. Many of the patients subjected to the cruel experiments died during the process, while others were driven mad or turned into horrifying monsters.

Out of all the patients that Dr. Young experimented on at Twintree, her prized subject was a mysterious young woman named Grace. Concerned by her niece’s long absence after what was meant to be a short trip to allow Dr. Young and Aevum to research her strange abilities, Grace’s aunt Ms. Wayland eventually traveled to the Wellness Center to inquire about her whereabouts. Not wanting to lose her most valuable patient, Dr. Young locked Ms. Wayland in Twintree’s basement where she eventually perished.

Miss Whisper’s Sinister Secret Paved the Way for Redfall’s Downfall

Psychic echoes of Dr. Young and the other Aevum founders in Redfall

After activating the weather monitoring equipment in Burial Point to locate Miss Whispers through the fog she was using to hide her whereabouts, players use the psychic remnant of the Twintree basement key to enter the doorway into Dr. Young’s memories. Once inside, they discover that Dr. Young was working with the other founders of Redfall’s Aevum Therapeutics company to keep Grace in a coma for still unknown, but clearly sinister reasons.

With the knowledge of her despicable deeds now in hand, all that remains is to eliminate the powerful Vampire God once and for all. Throughout the fight with Miss Whisper, she will use her powers of illusion in an attempt to confuse and overwhelm her attackers, sending out waves of spirits capable of forming vicious swarms if not quickly dispatched. Depending on which of the four Redfall survivors gamers chose to play, these swarms of spirits can make the fight against Miss Whisper a particularly challenging one for solo players.

It isn’t until players finally defeat Redfall’s Black Sun, the Vampire God responsible for plunging the town into darkness, that the full truth behind Dr. Young’s transformation into Miss Whisper is revealed. Thoroughly consumed by her lust for power, she and the other Aevum founders drain Grace of her blood in order to absorb the healing properties it contains. With this final act of depravity, Dr. Young completes her metamorphose into Miss Whisper, her vampiric visage now serving as a reflection of the all-consuming evil that lay inside her.

Redfall is available now for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
