During Microsoft's E3 2021 presentation, the upcoming co-op, open-world first-person shooter Redfall made quite an impression on fans. This title is coming from Arkane Studios, which may be best known for the Dishonored games, and will pit players against a town full of vampires. However, screenshots of Redfall's early development build that leaked onto the internet are all fans have really seen of the game.

After unveiling Redfall at E3 2021, Arkane Studios went silent on the subject for a while. Some gamers were concerned that Redfall could be lost in the noise of the larger gaming industry. From that angle, the leaked images and resulting focus from gamers could be considered a good thing.

The images originated on Reddit, where they were shared in the form of an Imgur album posted by a now-deleted account. These screenshots are being actively circulated on social media at the moment and can be located on Twitter without too much effort. Although Redfall is one of 2022's most anticipated games, these pictures appear to have been given a decidedly mixed reception. However, they do seem to serve the purpose of an early development build--namely, demonstrating the function and layout for later versions of the game.

Twitter users iamalitayyeb and gersix123 have both shared screenshots that show some of what players can expect from Redfall. This includes early character models, equipment load-outs, and character selection screens. Also present are early looks at the game's 3D environments, FPS perspective, and even a few hints of dialogue.

Judging by the images shared so far, the Redfall playtest featured the ability to climb rough terrain and conduct ambushes as well as take the battle to parking lots and flat plains. One screenshot even shows a player aiming at what seems to be a mostly-dry marina, complete with boat, from what used to be a dock. Gamers may be interested in the variety of environments the town apparently offers, even in this early build.

Although some gamers have noticed that these screenshots make Redfall look rather rough, it should be noted that these images were captured in an early playtest build. The game will likely get several more layers of polish before it reaches store shelves worldwide. This early build is likely intended to test Redfall's functionality and ensure it feels good to play, which are both notoriously difficult to capture visually. As such, it may be a good idea to wait and see before judging the washed-out graphics shown here.

Redfall releases in summer 2022 for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
