This year's joint Xbox and Bethesda E3 conference was the first since Xbox’s Zenimax acquisition, which saw studios such as Bethesda and Arkane Studios come under Xbox ownership. For Xbox fans, this year’s E3 was exciting, as Starfield was announced to be an Xbox console exclusive, and an all-new Arkane Studios project in Redfall was announced. The latter of which has been subject to a fairly extensive leak recently, which has given fans a general idea of what exactly the game will be.

The recent leak for Redfall revealed images of the game being playtested. This was quite an exciting leak for fans eagerly anticipating Redfall, as the game’s reveal did little to enlighten fans on exactly what the game would be. This is the first time fans are actually seeing images of gameplay for Redfall, and as a result, the images have been thoroughly analyzed. However, some have suggested that the screenshots paint a more worrying image of the state of the game. These suggestions became fairly widespread shortly after the leak occurred, causing a bit of controversy in the community.

Why Gamers Were Mad About Redfall’s Leak

When Redfall’s leaked images emerged, they gained a lot of traction, but not for the reason Redfall fans would have hoped. Redfall’s leaked images looked pretty rough, featuring clunky character models and environments that looked washed out. However, the images themselves were fairly grainy, and as such, it’s difficult to judge the graphics. On top of this, the leaked images were from a playtest, which will almost certainly not be representative of the finished product.

Playtests are often kept from the public for obvious reasons; the games are not in a finished state. As Redfall approaches its full release next year, further information will be given, including images closer to what fans may expect from Redfall.

These leaks are clearly from Alpha, and not fully representative of final gameplay, but players can still gather some information about Redfall's general gameplay design. For the neutral observer, there’s plenty that can be derived from the leaks that may prove exciting.

What Redfall’s Leaked Images Say About the Game

While the latest Redfall leaks may have provided quite a bit more information about the title, fans already had some idea of what to expect. It was already clear that Redfall was an open-world looter shooter, with four-player co-op. While its open-world design may differentiate it from the likes of Left 4 Dead or Back 4 Blood, to this point it had been commonly compared with titles such as these. The vampire shooter is set to release next year, however, further official information has been difficult to come by. However, the latest Redfall leaks may have given fans a relatively good idea of what they can expect from Redfall ahead of its 2022 launch.

While comparisons to Left 4 Dead-style shooters are fairly common for Redfall, the latest leaks may put it in competition with games like Borderlands. Redfall’s leaked images showed the game is likely to be a looter shooter, as players can be seen in the images finding and inspecting weapons. These weapons had special effects similar to those that had been popularized by the Borderlands series, as well as level restrictions. Redfall’s inventory was also shown, which featured a paneled design, also reminiscent of Borderlands. Unlike Borderlands though, it seems as though Redfall will be playable in the third person, while the world of Redfall is post-apocalyptic earth, closer to that which can be seen in State of Decay.
