Social media platform Reddit continues the tradition of sites releasing end of year stats by revealing its 2020 Year in Review yesterday. The Reddit 2020 Year in Review looks at the most popular trends and discussion across the site, including highly discussed games such as League of Legends.

The Year in Review posts are a way for Reddit to highlight different communities that came to the forefront. The site used data from January 1 through the end of October, and weighed activity by combining the amount of total posts in a community with the amount of comments. It should be no surprise that topics like COVID-19, politics, Black Lives Matter, and ways to adapt to stay-at-home living dominated the site this year. However, there were a few mini-categories such as most discussed TV shows, movies, and recipes, and here Reddit listed the top five video games of the year.

League of Legends was the most popular video game on the site in terms of community activity. The other top games were Minecraft, Animal Crossing, Fortnite, and Destiny 2. While League of Legends was top dog, Animal Crossing had an enormous 1771.8 percent increase in activity this year, which makes sense considering the successful release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

It has been a pretty big year for not only League of Legends, but Riot Games as a whole. Fans have seen the release of two big games, Valorant and Legends of Runeterra. The latter, a card game based on League of Legends, likely helped push the flagship Riot property to the top of Reddit's video game communities.

There have been five new champions introduced in League this year: Sett, Lillia, Yone, Samira, and Seraphine. Players will soon be able to play as the support-tank Rell, the sixth and final champion for the year. The most recent addition, Seraphine, was a topic of both positive and negative discussion throughout the year; from her sudden appearance on social media, to the "surprise" collaboration with K/DA, to the controversies surrounding her design, and more. Fans also got to see the return of the virtual girl group K/DA, which released its full EP, ALL OUT.

League of Legends fans saw the rework of champions such as Fiddlesticks and Volibear. A new single-player experience called Ruined King: A League of Legends Story was revealed for next year. The game had collaborations with fashion labels, plenty of new merch, and even revealed a board game called Tellstones: King's Gambit. Fans had plenty of news to talk about on Reddit, not to mention fanart, game highlights, and other special moments.

It hasn't been all great for League of Legends players, however. There were the aforementioned controversies surrounding Seraphine, constant bugs discovered, disliked changes to characters and items, the arguably disappointing performance at Worlds 2020 by K/DA, and Riot shutting down the Oceanic Pro League.

Either way, fans have had plenty to talk about and plenty of things to look forward to. With Season 11 looking to create a big year of content, fans need to wait and see if they can make League of Legends the most discussed game on Reddit again in 2021.
