Red Faction Armageddon Trailers

Red Faction: Armageddon may have suffered a very slight delay, but the demo will be available tomorrow, and the full game is not far off. THQ is doing its part to keep interest in Armageddon high by producing a number of videos and releasing some new screenshots.

Red Faction: Armageddon has several retailer specific pre-order bonuses, but for many people the choice will boil down to two options: The Commando Pack, available exclusively from GameStop, and the Recon Pack, available exclusively from Best Buy.

Obviously, each bonus has its own strengths and weakness. For those of you who remain on the fence about which version might be best to pre-order, THQ would like to offer up these educational videos and accompanying screenshots. Let’s start with the Red Faction: Armageddon Commando trailer.

The Commando Pack includes the armored Commando uniform and adds two new weapons to your arsenal. Players will spray an unforgiving stream of destruction with the Plasma Thrower, or slice and dice the infestation with dual Laser Pistols.

Plasma Thrower

  • Type of Item: Firearm
  • Origin: Red Faction Militia
  • Description: Plasma-based, Experimental, Exponentially powerful
  • Uses: Demolitions, Heavy Assault
  • History: New weapon designed during the midst of Armageddon
  • The Red Faction militia designed this weapon during the descent into the depths of Mars after Armageddon. Though still in experimental stages, Darius Mason utilized its plasma arcs to help level a number of alien nests in 2225.

Laser Pistols

  • Type of Item: Firearm
  • Origin: Red Faction
  • Description: Very accurate pistols that fire a sustained Laser beam.  Prone to overheating but excellent damage over time.
  • Uses: Anti Personnel
  • The Red Faction militia designed this weapon during the descent into the depths of Mars after Armageddon. Though still in experimental stages, Darius Mason utilized its plasma arcs to help level a number of alien nests in 2225.

The Recon Pack includes the clandestine Recon uniform, constructed specifically for Red Faction snipers and spies. Unleash two new weapons on your foes, including the Arc Welder, which immobilizes and electrocutes clusters of enemies, and the XNG-5000, which launches devastating Nanite-filled projectiles that seek out targets and dissolve them.

Arc Welder

  • Type of Item: Electrical/Firearm
  • Origin: Red Faction Militia
  • Description: Capable of stun or kill, Heavy, Electrically charged, Practical, Tough
  • Uses: Quiet kills, Stun, Short-Medium Range Attack
  • History: Refitted version of the original EDF-created Arc Welder, now produced by Red Faction Militia
  • Seen In: Red Faction: Armageddon, Red Faction
  • This updated version of the original Arc Welder became a standard weapon for the Red Faction Militia of the late 22nd Century. When properly utilized, the Welder could be set to “stun” or “kill” settings. Many militiamen treasured the weapon for this capacity as more than a handful of simple sweeps turned ugly during the rise of the Cultists.

  • Type of Item: Launcher
  • Origin: Marauder
  • Description: Fires a nanite charge that sticks to anything it hits, causing severe damage over time and dissolving any structures it attaches to.
  • Uses: Anti Personnel, Destruction

Alright, by now you’ve presumably made your choice.

Armageddon will be the fourth full-length Red Faction game (not counting the downloadable spin-off Red Faction: Battlegrounds — read the review before you buy it). It’s almost hard to believe now that the original Red Faction launched in the early days of the PlayStation 2. Naturally, some current Red Faction fans may not have played the older games, and as a result are missing out on some of the fiction of the universe. To remedy that situation, THQ has put together a nifty video detailing the long history of the series. Take a look.

With Red Faction: Armageddon’s release just over a month away, the Summer game season is nearly here. A few years back, Red Faction: Guerrilla seemed to come from out of nowhere, and surprised a lot of gamers by being deeply fun. Will Armageddon be as well received? The trailers suggest a game that has been influenced by Dead Space and Gears of War, and while there is nothing inherently bad about being influenced by such great games, they certainly are a long way from the open-world mayhem that made Guerrilla such a blast.

What do you think, will Armageddon be another great Summer game, or should Volition have stuck with an open-world design for Red Faction?

Red Faction: Armageddon will be released for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC on June 7, 2011.
