A delayed game is never a good thing to see, but in the case of Red Faction: Armageddon there is a silver lining. While Volition has confirmed that their next title in the Red Faction series won't be making its planned release date, the delay will only be pushing the launch back a week. Jilted fans will still have the game to look forward to on June 7, as well as a playable demo to on May 3.

The move isn't foreign territory to Volition, with Armageddon already being delayed once. While the developer isn't giving any specific reasons for the delay, you have to think that a single week won't be enough time to address any major problems in development, so fans shouldn't take the announcement as a sign of any trouble brewing.

Instead, look at the positive. While the game may have been pushed back, the May 3 release of a playable demo available through Xbox Live and PSN is right on schedule. Well, once Sony gets their online service back up and running. A demo may be just what the doctor ordered for many newcomers to the series, or fans who are remaining skeptical about the changes being made to the formula.

While the Red Faction series has made its way through genres from a first-person shooter to an open-world third person action game, the initial gameplay trailers for RFA show a game resembling more linear titles like Dead Space or Gears of War. The story of the series won't be modified as much, still keeping its ties to the previous titles and important members in the Mars rebellion.

The latest story trailer focused on the characters and plot of Armageddon, but what many fans are likely looking forward to are the gravity-bending weapons and over-the-top Ruin Mode. We'll have to wait until June to see everything the game has to offer, but the demo should give a good idea of how well the new mechanics and visuals of the game fit into the established style of the series.

Will you be trying out the demo next week, or is it just too much of a tease this far in advance of the actual game? Hopefully Red Faction: Battlegrounds didn't leave too bad a taste in your mouth to give Armageddon a chance.

Red Faction: Armageddon will be released for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on June 7, with the demo set to hit Xbox Live and possibly PSN on May 3, 2011.
