When it comes to games that release solely on consoles, like Red Dead Redemption 2, there is bound to be a debate about which version is the best. Frame rates, resolutions, and graphical settings all play into that debate as well, and luckily folk much smarter than us help test every quality under the sun.
Once again Digital Foundry is working its digital wizardry to test Red Dead Redemption 2 on every major console iteration from Xbox One S all the way up to Xbox One X. And according to those tests, the Xbox One X is the “go-to platform” for those that want the best visual experience playing Red Dead Redemption 2.
Digital Foundry put each console through rigorous testing and the results favor Xbox One X across the board. Microsoft’s top tier home platform offers the best resolution, fidelity, and frame rate, outpacing all competitors including its own console family. The Xbox One X delivers Red Dead Redemption 2 in native 4K resolution with some added bells and whistles, and it is the only platform that feels locked at 30 frames per second.
PS4 Pro came in second, performing admirably but its resolution uses a checkerboard-like effect to hit 4K. Most importantly, its stability can’t match that of Xbox One X, which can be a major determining factor for gamers.
The in-depth write up covers all of the platforms that can run Red Dead Redemption 2 and although the consensus favors the Xbox One X, the other consoles are no slouches either. There are just some areas where the X outperforms its competition and some gamers like to know where best to play the latest release.
Of course, the presumed PC release of Red Dead Redemption 2 will inevitably surpass even the Xbox One X but Rockstar Games has yet to commit to a port just yet. As of right now the focus is on the console versions, which are now out and then getting Red Dead Online running. Then the talks about a PC version can begin and a new debate about “best place to play” can begin.
