Rumor: Red Dead Redemption Remake in the Works

A new rumor claims that Rockstar Games is working on a remake of Red Dead Redemption for release on both next-gen and current-gen consoles, with PC undecided. Red Dead Redemption was released in 2010 for the Xbox 360 and PS3 and has only been made available for current platforms through backward compatibility and the PlayStation Now cloud service. The rumored remake would be released between late 2020 and early 2021.

According to Reddit user throwaway1113454, Red Dead Redemption is being remade entirely by Rockstar. It's not just a remaster. As such, it will have a larger map as well as new features to bring it closer to the experience of Red Dead Redemption 2. Protagonist John Marston's voice actor, Rob Wiethoff, is reportedly being brought back to record new voicelines that will further solidify the connection between Red Dead Redemption and its prequel followup Red Dead Redemption 2.

The Red Dead Redemption remake is tentatively planned for release in celebration of its 10th anniversary in 2020. However, due to issues ongoing with development, a delayed release in 2021 is becoming a realistic possibility.

This rumor should be treated as very shaky, given that it's sourced through Reddit and comes from someone who claims to have a friend at Rockstar Games. However, this isn't the first time that a Red Dead Redemption remake was rumored. A glitch found in Red Dead Redemption 2 where the protagonist's voice was replaced by the voice of Red Dead Redemption's second protagonist led to speculation about this now rumored remake.

While this single rumor may be difficult to ascertain the validity of, the idea of a Red Dead Redemption 2 remake isn't challenging to believe. Rockstar parent company Take-Two has said specifically that Rockstar is working towards an increased release frequency. This has led analysts to predict that a new Rockstar game will be announced in 2019 with a release in 2020. Given that a Rockstar-caliber sequel will likely take years to develop, a smaller project like a remake is much more within the realm of possibility.

With that said, until Rockstar is willing to officially confirm its plans for its next game, the possibility of a Red Dead Redemption remake is completely speculation and rumor.

Red Dead Redemption is available on PS3 and Xbox 360.
