The recently surfaced image of the Red Dead Redemption: The Outlaws Collection may have given fans hope, but now that is all falling apart. While the image implies the existence of a Red Dead Redemption remake, bundled with a next-gen port of Red Dead Redemption 2, it is all very likely fake.
Rumors regarding a potential remake or remaster of 2010's Red Dead Redemption have been swirling around for quite some time now. All of this was further fueled when Rockstar Games purchased Ruffian Games, the studio responsible for releasing Halo: The Master Chief Collection. If that wasn't enough, the game was also recently listed on Amazon with a price tag of $49.99 and a release date of December 10, 2020. Many started speculating that an announcement was set for this year's The Game Awards that take place on the same day.
While Rockstar Games never confirmed or denied these rumors, a new image surfaced that cited the existence of a Red Dead Redemption: The Outlaws Collection for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Unfortunately, this is certainly a hoax, as Kotaku's Zack Zwiezen extensively explained on Twitter.
Starting off, Zweizen says that the creator probably searched for a high-quality PNG image of Arthur Morgan and John Marston and after some tweaking, planted it on the actual cover art from Red Dead Redemption 2. There are also weird black marks on either side of the alleged cover art.
At this point, it's pretty clear that the image is fake but there are further errors that need to be pointed out. Firstly, the PS5 version of the game is listed out as "Playstation 5" instead of "PlayStation 5," which ignores the spelling convention for the Sony console brand. Also, as pointed by DualShockers, the return date for the game is listed earlier than the game's release date.
While Rockstar Games' track record says otherwise, a Red Dead Redemption remake won't be that surprising. Firstly, a huge chunk of the Red Dead Redemption map is present in Red Dead Redemption 2 including some key areas like New Austin and New Elizabeth. So it seems rebuilding Red Dead Redemption on the assets of Red Dead Redemption 2 may not prove to be that difficult for Rockstar Games. Further, seeing how Red Dead Redemption continues the story of RDR 2, many fans would be curious to explore the story of John Marston after the demolition of the Van Der Linde Gang.
Red Dead Redemption is available on PS3, Xbox 360 and also on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S via backwards compatibility.
