While Rockstar’s saga of the Marston family remains closed for the moment, fans of the epic western Red Dead Redemption are going to have more than a few reasons to return to the game next week. In anticipation of the release of the game’s very last DLC packaage, the Myths & Mavericks Bonus Pack, we’ve gotten a few looks at the brand new multiplayer skins and maps that will soon be available free of charge.

We’re all in favor of free DLC, and the amount of characters and maps on tap is more than many will expect. More than a fitting farewell to one of our favorite games of 2010, and from the new screenshots, the pack contains locations and faces that many fans have been hoping to see before the project was put on the shelf for good.

From bumbling deputies to Mexican revolutionaries, there’s more than a few one-of-a-kind skins featured in the DLC, so take a look and see what zero dollars can buy you these days:

More than half a dozen new multiplayer maps (mostly Shootout and Stronghold modes) would normally be enough to get fans of online play interested, but the chance to embody some truly unique western gunslingers is an added bonus. There’s a good chance that many Red Dead fans finished the story component and called it day, but more than a few found their place among Rockstar’s Social Club community. And as much as we’d like to see the next chapter in the Red Dead series, free multiplayer content is better than nothing.

With the Myths & Mavericks Bonus Pack releasing in advance of Rockstar’s multiplayer event on September 23, any of you considering taking part would be wise to download the DLC before then. The existing fan base is no stranger to the game’s online modes, so having the week to get to know the new locations will go a long way.

Even though Red Dead Redemption hit store shelves over a year ago, it’s nice to see Rockstar providing free content to fans before the holiday storm of game releases begins. And with next-generation console rumors gaining steam, there’s a good chance that this DLC may be Rockstar’s last release on the Xbox 360 and PS3.

The Red Dead Redemption Myths & Mavericks Bonus Pack will be released free of charge on PSN and Xbox Live on Sept 13, 2011.
