Rockstar Games is well known for its two most successful series, Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto, which give their players a sense of freedom in a massive open world. While the games may be set in different eras, there are a lot of similarities, from playing as a person going against the law, to being able to rob, kill, or injure just about any NPC. However, one big difference between the latest games, Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA 5, is that the latter has an intricate and enjoyable heist system allows players unity to plan out robberies to get a massive influx of cash.
Red Dead Redemption 3 is not going to be released anytime soon, but that has not stopped fans from speculating about what the next game in the legendary series holds. One key feature that would work great in the setting and style of Red Dead Redemption is the heist system, which could allow players to plan out their own heists, from surveying the target to picking the best way to get the money. A dedicated heist system in Red Dead Redemption 3 could open doors for players that have been struggling to get a steady stream of cash or to rapidly grow their notoriety levels.
The Wild West - A Perfect Setting
With the setting of the Red Dead games, it would not be difficult to imagine the main cast will probably plan out heists. In Red Dead Redemption 2, there were heists, usually train or bank robberies, but they were never planned out by the player, but rather were hatched by one of Arthur’s associates. This takes away a lot of freedom, especially if players would rather stay anonymous and keep away from gun fights. With the ability to plan out a heist, players could pick the best route for entry and exit, dictate how the heist should be handled, and even hire or pick the necessary people for the job.
The Wild West is a dangerous place and while people may find a sense of safety in towns, these locations are often the target of many bandits. So, while GTA 5 may have revolutionized the series with its heists, Red Dead Redemption already has the perfect setting for it. From conning the bank tellers to let the player into the vault, to riding in guns drawn and taking as many hostages as possible, customizable approaches to heists could depend on the town, the player’s notoriety level, or the presence of a rival gang.
Dutch As A Playable Character
While Red Dead Redemption gave players control of John Marston after he left the Van der Linde gang, Red Dead Redemption 2 saw players controlling Arthur Morgan, one of the top men in the gang before John left, the next Red Dead Redemption may allow players to control Dutch as he builds up the Van der Linde gang and shows fans the origins of the incredible storyline. If this is the case, then players will need to embark on numerous heists to increase the reputation of the Van der Linde gang and make their names known throughout the land.
With Dutch as the main character, players will have a lot more control over the decisions of the gang, thus, heist planning will need to be added in. Throughout Red Dead Redemption 2, players hear about past jobs done by the gang, so seeing these play out in a Van der Linde origin story would be interesting, but allowing the players to control the narrative would be even more enjoyable. Adding in GTA 5’s heist system means that players will control Dutch as a leader, capable of finding good jobs and keeping his gang happy.
Red Dead Redemption 2 showed the world how a prequel can effectively build up a story while not diminishing the gameplay or the characters. It is the perfect balance of gameplay and cinematic experiences, which is why many fans are already eagerly awaiting news of Red Dead Redemption 3. Should the game be announced, adding in a heist system would give players much more control over their gang, and could mean that the game is either giving players control over Dutch, since he makes the decisions, or allowing players to create their gang. Whatever the case may be, the heist system from GTA 5 is an exciting feature that could be included in Red Dead Redemption 3 to make heists more time-consuming, enjoyable, and rewarding simultaneously.
