A Red Dead Redemption 2 player has discovered a tragic story detail, after seven playthroughs of the game. With so much play time under their belt, it goes to show the level of detail in Red Dead Redemption 2, that there's always something new to find.

The story of Red Dead Redemption 2 is already considered to be one of the saddest in all of gaming. As a prequel, most players have the benefit of knowing how the story of each character ends, which can give layers of extra meaning to even the smallest quote. The dramatic irony of it all is a powerful storytelling technique, and it's one that Rockstar harnesses brilliantly to draw every ounce of emotion from the story. It's testament to its brilliance that Red Dead Redemption 2's story doesn't lose any impact on subsequent playthroughs.

The image posted to the r/reddeadredemption subreddit points out that at the very end of the game, when Abigail tells John to get to work raising their boy, they're standing in the spot of their eventual graves in the original Red Dead Redemption. It's a small touch, but one that makes a huge impact. That same spot is also where Abigail and John get married in Red Dead Redemption 2, too, so it's clearly an intentional choice for Rockstar to return to this specific spot in such moments.

While many players might have realized this small detail, it's still great that Red Dead Redemption 2 players are taking the time to point it out for others to see. Plenty of gamers in the thread itself were completely unaware, claiming to have a deeper understanding of the story as a result. There are just so many story details hidden away, that there's likely still some that no one has discovered yet.

The direction that Red Dead Redemption 3 will take its story is still completely up in the air. Some feel that Red Dead Redemption 3 is time to put the Van Der Linde gang to bed, and that's arguably the best way forward. Ultimately, that story has been told, and John and Abigail's tragic end need not be expanded upon further. As it stands it's poignant, tragic, and a masterclass in dramatic irony. It would be a shame to diminish that by continuing to explore that avenue. Only Rockstar has the true answer, but it will likely be a long time yet before players find out the story of Red Dead Redemption 3.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
