While Red Dead Redemption 2 presents rich environments that change dramatically during in-game time, fans argue that the map's considerable size outweighs how dense each locale is. Settlement regions such as Valentine or Strawberry are packed with activities and NPCs, for example, but the sweeping vistas between them have less notable features that the player can interact with. Rather, one fan has demonstrated a number of the intermittent dangers that Red Dead Redemption 2's open world is saturated with, despite its unassuming plains and rugged terrain.

Red Dead Redemption 2 gradually transitions players through its expansive map in the narrative. For example, players cannot freely explore Blackwater until the game's epilogue. Nonetheless, fans have continued to celebrate the immersive visuals seen throughout each of the game's environments. Reddit user GAME-LAPSE previously captured a time-lapse video that showcases how Red Dead Redemption 2's skies and environments react to dynamic weather patterns and a day-and-night cycle. And now GAME-LAPSE has returned to the game with another time-lapse video.

GAME-LAPSE captures themselves walking from one end of Red Dead Redemption 2's map to the other, claiming that it took them a total of 3 hours and 14 minutes. The video shows the character walking at an unhurried pace for the duration of the time-lapse, which further demonstrates how dynamic Red Dead Redemption 2's open world environments are. However, selecting a destination that makes the player traverse the rugged heartland plains subjects them to seemingly random occurrences that they may come across. Because of these sometimes hostile surprises in Red Dead Redemption 2, the time-lapse creator's map-wide trek was not peaceful or unbothered.

GAME-LAPSE can be seen getting into two separate altercations within the first minute of the time-lapse. Random ambushes that appear unscripted occur in Red Dead Redemption 2 while players travel, so it would be inevitable that attackers would come across the player's path at some point during hours of walking. Other humorous happenstances occur so briefly during the time-lapse that they are nearly imperceptible, such as being knocked to the ground by an elk and a wagon. GAME-LAPSE also states that wolves had appeared during their saunter, but fortunately the wolves "crossed the path without bothering" and chose instead to start "attacking a NPC."

Apparently they had heard a cougar in their midst for nearly 15 minutes, but luckily it never appeared. Cores simulating authentic, quality-of-life micromanagements are also addressed in the time-lapse. The time-lapse creator can be seen having to partake of an occasional consumable and fortify their cores as they proceed on their journey. Strangers who offer isolated side missions are oftentimes marked on Red Dead Redemption 2's map and mini-map with a question mark, but some NPCs may have a simple request for money while the player is out and about. GAME-LAPSE says that they came across NPCs requesting assistance, but ignored them for the purposes of the time-lapse.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
