Nintendo wants to make it clear that while the company has missed out on some of the biggest AAA titles in the past, it absolutely wants to be in the mix for those kinds of titles in the very near future. Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime says this includes games like Red Dead Redemption 2. In fact, Nintendo's head says if the timing had been better, gamers would absolutely be playing Rockstar's critically-acclaimed game on the Switch right now.

Fils-Aime sat down with the Hollywood Reporter earlier this week and explained why exactly Red Dead Redemption 2 isn't on Nintendo's latest console. While previous hardware (the Wii U in particular) couldn't handle the demands of games like RDR2, that isn't the case with the Switch, according to Reggie. He says the only thing that kept the open world western off the Switch is because development of the game started before there was even mention of the new console. When he was asked whether or not his company wants these kinds of games on the Switch, he made it clear that he did:

"Red Dead has been in development for years, time that predated any communication of Nintendo Switch. So, from the developer’s mentality, they need to move forward and finish the game they’ve been working on and then be in a position to look at other opportunities. Any game from a key third-party that’s coming out now, typically that development started well before any conversations about Nintendo Switch."

Fils-Aime went on to say that Nintendo would "have to see" what happens moving forward in regards to games like Red Dead Redemption 2 but it's clear he wants gamers to know it's not a situation where the hardware in the Switch couldn't handle running the game. Those claims appear to be backed up at least a little bit when looking at games like Wolfenstein 2 that have landed on the console. While the Nazi shoot-em-up isn't anywhere near as immersive, it does have impressive visuals that have managed to be ported over in good quality. That game appears to be a harbinger of more AAA games like Red Dead Redemption 2 coming to the Nintendo Switch moving forward.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now on PS4 and Xbox One.
