Although Grand Theft Auto 5 never received any post-launch story DLC, fans are holding out hope that Rockstar’s latest game, Red Dead Redemption 2, will buck that trend. As of right now, the developer has yet to acknowledge whether DLC is in the cards but a recent audio file datamine has offered early evidence that some additional content may be on the way.

Be warned that spoilers for Red Dead Redemption 2 follow.

Apparently, while digging through the audio files in Red Dead Redemption 2, a user found dialogue that sounds like it belongs to Jack Marston. However, it’s not young Jack Marston or even teenaged Jack Marston, but adult Jack.

In the original Red Dead Redemption, players eventually get to control Jack Marston as part of the game’s epilogue. John Marston has been long gone but his son Jack is still hell-bent on revenge. For Red Dead Redemption 2, John becomes the playable character in the epilogue, as Rockstar bridges the gap between the events in the two games, but the epilogue concludes well before Jack becomes an adult.

Having not been able to listen to the audio files personally it’s hard to confirm that the audio is adult Jack and not merely a soundalike. Moreover, there are no details as to what the dialogue says, which could help determine whether the audio is for additional content or if it was simply scrapped dialogue.

It’s also hard to imagine that Rockstar Games would create DLC that skips past the remaining events in between RDR 2 and RDR 1. If Red Dead 2 were to get story DLC it seemed more likely that Rockstar would want to show players what other members of the Van Der Linde gang were doing after the big falling out. Then again, we’re sure fans wouldn’t scoff at the prospect of seeing what Jack Marston was up to after avenging his dad’s murder.

The other, but far less likely, possibility is that the audio files are part of Rockstar’s plans to offer a Red Dead 1 remaster within Red Dead 2. Most of the original Red Dead map is found within the massive open world of Red Dead Redemption 2, so there is potential for Rockstar to recreate the first game within the second. But the effort necessary to complete such a feat would be huge. Not to mention, dataminers should have found more audio to suggest that is really going to happen.

Ultimately only time will tell whether these audio files have a purpose or not. We know that Rockstar had its voice actors record fake dialogue to try to mislead them but bringing Jack Marston’s voice actor in to record lines without any intention of using them seems odd.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now for PS4 and Xbox One.
