As if it needed to be said, Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the biggest video game releases of the year, with the sales for Rockstar Games' open world western having already surpassed the lifetime sales figures of its predecessor. So, with RDR2 being such a major part of the mainstream conversation at the moment, the always topical South Park decided to tip its hat toward the title by peppering its latest episode with a bunch of references to the Rockstar release.

The South Park episode in question is entitled, "Time to Get Cereal," and the majority of the story revolves around the return of Al Gore and ManBearPig, but even so, there are multiple Red Dead Redemption 2 references throughout. In one scene, for instance, Sergeant Harrison Yates and his wife Maggie have an argument over RDR2 due to her saving over his game file instead of starting one of her own.

As most gamers and South Park fans may agree, the scene is quite funny, with Sgt. Yates exploding with anger over the fact that Maggie progressed much farther than he has been able to after acquiring a sniper rifle and more without him. Yates is so upset that he claims his wife stole his life and curtailed his chance at earning more Honor points.

South Park is certainly no stranger when it comes to using video games as inspiration for its episodes, as Red Dead Redemption 2 is only the latest in a long line of gaming references in the animated program. Even in South Park's early years, creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker have shown their proclivity for gaming, with one of the show's first nods to video games being Kenny's ownership of a Caleco-Vision console. And even well beyond the classic "Chinpokomon" episode, newer releases like Overwatch and Fortnite have also been mentioned in different episodes.

All things considered, it should really come as no surprise that South Park remains tuned into the pulse of the gaming world with its recent acknowledgement of Red Dead Redemption 2's release, especially since the show has a current-gen title of its own in The Fractured But Whole. Nevertheless, it's still great to see that the minds behind South Park continue to express their love for gaming as a whole by dedicating jokes to the medium in the show.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
