Red Dead Redemption 2 is considered to be one of the best games of the last console generation. In most respects, critics and gamers loved Rockstar's latest take on the wild west, especially the narrative and open-world design. Red Dead Redemption 2 pushed the boundaries with PS4 and Xbox One, with its impressive visuals and highly detailed world. Now that PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X have been released, some gamers have been imagining what an upgraded version of Red Dead 2 would be like. Rockstar Games could breathe new life into the game once again with PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Rockstar Games is no stranger to upgrading older titles for new generations. Grand Theft Auto 5 was originally released in 2013 on Xbox 360 and PS3, and it was later re-released on PS4 and Xbox One. GTA 5 is being released again in November for PS5 and Xbox Series X, along with the expected generational upgrades. Nothing has been confirmed that would suggest a Red Dead Redemption 2 upgrade is coming for PS5 and Xbox Series X, but it's easy to imagine what could be enhanced. Red Dead 2 is already considered one of the best games of a generation, and it could have a strong chance of being similarly praised in the new console generation too.

Red Dead Redemption 2's Expected Upgrades

With Xbox Series X and PS5 game upgrades, certain enhancements have been commonplace so far. For the most part, Red Dead Redemption 2 runs smoothly at 30FPS across the variety of platforms it's available on. One possible improvement would be for Rockstar to target 60FPS in a next-gen version of the game. This could result in a much smoother gameplay experience and lessen any possible stuttering. Red Dead 2 generally runs very smoothly in its current version, but 60FPS could result in even smoother gameplay.

Another seemingly customary enhancement for PS5 and Xbox Series X upgrades is hitting 4K resolution. 4K resolution rates are sought after in modern gaming to give the best visual quality possible. The PS5 and Xbox Series X are capable of achieving this resolution, and Red Dead Redemption 2 in 4K would ensure that the game would look better than ever. 4K resolution would undoubtedly be at the top of fans' wishlists for an upgraded version of Red Dead Redemption 2.

PS5 and Xbox Series X are powerful consoles more than capable of achieving 60FPS and 4K resolution. A lot of gamers desire smooth gameplay and crisp visuals, and upgrading Red Dead 2 to achieve higher frame rates and resolution would make a well-rounded improvement to the game. Upgrades that enhance frame rate and resolution are becoming increasingly popular with older titles, and doing so with Red Dead Redemption 2 would be a great baseline for bringing it to the next generation.

Red Dead Redemption 2 and Console-Specific Improvements

PS5 and Xbox Series X are not only powerful consoles, but they have unique features that a Red Dead 2 upgrade could take advantage of. PlayStation 5's DualSense controller has been acclaimed for its functionality and how it can add to gameplay. Specifically, adaptive triggers and haptic feedback have been especially well received. The adaptive triggers allow for contextual resistance, which could work well with Red Dead 2's gunplay. For instance, if Arthur is trying to fire his weapons when he needs to reload, the triggers could kick in and prevent the player from pressing the trigger down fully.

The DualSense's haptic feedback functionality has also been lauded for its ability to improve immersion. The controller is capable of varying levels of rumbling, which can be used as feedback for players. In the case of Red Dead 2, this could be used for horse-riding and traveling on different terrain, and the DualSense's rumble effect could change depending on the context. The haptic feedback is considered by many to help immersion levels, and Red Dead Redemption 2 could see a lot of benefit from Rockstar using it.

Just like PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X has its own unique features that Rockstar Games could take advantage of. Xbox Series X's Smart Delivery is a no-frills way for gamers to play the best version of a game possible for the platform they're using. If Red Dead 2 was upgraded and a gamer was using an Xbox Series X, Smart Delivery would ensure that it's the correct version for that console. It's simple, but it allows gamers to play the best version of a game possible without worrying about its version. With Smart Delivery, gamers can buy a game once and not have to worry about paying for it again.

Xbox Game Pass is another unique feature that Rockstar could take advantage of. If Red Dead 2 was updated for Xbox Series X, a release on Game Pass could be huge for gamers and Rockstar. Players would be able to play the game without incurring extra costs and see how the game has been updated for the new generation. Red Dead Redemption 2 would stand a good chance of further success with next-gen enhancements and could play and feel better than ever.

New Red Dead 2 Single-Player Content

It's unlikely that Red Dead 2 will receive any single-player expansions, but it could be a great way to entice fans to try out a next-gen version of the game. A single-player expansion could see further adventures with John Marston, or even be set before the main story of Red Dead 2. It's very unlikely that Rockstar will make any solo expansions for the game at this stage, which has been disappointing for a lot of fans. Rockstar made it clear in late 2020 that single-player DLC won't happen, but fans have been petitioning for it nonetheless. While it probably won't happen, it's hard to argue that exclusive next-generation content wouldn't make for an enticing offer for a new version of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Rockstar could have a great opportunity with Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online with PS5 and Xbox Series X. Not only could the game receive visual and technical enhancements, but it could also have platform-specific advantages as well. New solo content would be a great way to entice players with a next-gen Red Dead 2, but it's very unlikely to happen. Rockstar is currently porting Grand Theft Auto 5 for PS5 and Xbox Series X, and it wouldn't be surprising if Red Dead Redemption 2 followed suit down the line.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia.
