Red Dead Redemption 2 was considered one of the best games of 2018 by fans and critics alike, and to this day players are discovering new details in Rockstar’s impressive version of the Wild West. One player looking to join in on the fun thought they had found Red Dead Redemption 2 for a steal in the PlayStation Store — only to realize the low price was not what it seemed.

Signing on and finding the game on sale is certainly not too unbelievable, as numerous PlayStation Store sales have been seen in the back half of 2020. However, the game’s incredibly low price looks a bit too good to be true, and for the unfortunate player who bought the item, it certainly was. Marked at $29.99 and on sale for $7.49, Redditor MiniTelevision wasted no time buying what they thought was Red Dead Redemption 2, sharing the results of the purchase online.

Making effective use of the “so that was a lie” meme, the user expanded on the issue in the comments. While the player thought they were purchasing the full version of Red Dead Redemption 2, it turns out that they were only buying the standalone version of Red Dead Online. In a reply to an equally confused Redditor, MiniTelevision says that “it’s only Red Dead Online,” expanding on their comment to say they “fell for it” and “wish it was more specific in the icon.” By looking at the icon and title alone, MiniTelevision certainly has a point.

It is impossible to blame the Reddit user for making such a mistake, as the icon is incredibly deceitful. Showing the cover art of Red Dead Redemption 2 as well as the game’s normal logo, it would be easy to get tricked by the store posting. Not only is nothing mentioning Red Dead Online present, but the title of the item says Red Dead Redemption 2 as well. As such, it should be expected that buying it grants access to the full story of Arthur Morgan, but clearly that is not the case.

Still, MiniTelevision seems to be handling the trickery well, as the user does acknowledge that it is a “good deal for those that only care for RDR.” With this Canadian PlayStation Store purchase having a higher price tag too, Red Dead Online players can get the mode for only $5 in the United States. While this is an extremely low price, there is a lot less value to the deal than meets the eye.

Unless players are interested in carrying out quests in Red Dead Online, they should be careful about the version of Red Dead Redemption 2 they are buying in the PlayStation Store. While the misnamed listing was likely not intentional, players could still be very frustrated if they expect the full game.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
