Red Dead Redemption 2 to Give PS4 Players First Access to Some Online Content

Sony Interactive Entertainment officially reveals that Rockstar Games' Red Dead Redemption 2 gives PlayStation 4 players first access to some online content.

While fans the world over are almost assuredly poring over Rockstar Games' first official trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2, an announcement from Sony Interactive Entertainment that coincides with the reveal for the western title might not sit well with all gamers. As it happens, the company has stated that players of Red Dead Redemption 2 on the PlayStation 4 will get "first access to earn select online content" as part of a partnership between the platform holder and developer Rockstar Games.

According to a post on the PlayStation Blog, John Koller, Sony's vice president of PlayStation Brand Marketing, has declared that Red Dead Redemption 2 is "handcrafted to take full advantage of the PS4." Since his statement is relatively scant on concrete details as far as what type of "online content" will be involved in the deal, Koller said there will be "more details soon" on the exclusive access that the platform's players will have in the game.

While Koller's post regarding Rockstar Games and Sony partnering for Red Dead Redemption 2 offers little in the way of actual information about the title itself or the kind of materials PS4 fans will be privy to first, fans have been left to speculate on the matter. With this being the case, it's highly likely that any ancillary assets for RDR 2 will become accessible through the multiplayer feature of Red Dead Online, the domain of which was recently registered by Rockstar parent company Take-Two Interactive.

Beyond Red Dead Redemption 2's online content, little is known about the western game itself, as the title was only announced a couple of days ago to make fans aware of its fall 2017 release date. At this point, as far as the story, setting, and gameplay features for the forthcoming sequel are concerned, all we have to cling to are rumors such as the one suggesting that the game has two protagonists.

Of course, while fans wait for more information to become released for Red Dead Redemption 2, many have already begun to discuss the title in-depth and share what they wish it will have at launch. Although some are hoping for a more traditional narrative arc in the way of continuing the first Redemption's plot, there are fans interested in seeing Rockstar take a more oblique path by having Landon Ricketts as the main character in order to flesh out backstory on the legendary gunslinger's life more fully.

What do you think about Red Dead Redemption 2 giving PS4 fans first access to online content? What do you hope to see from the title overall? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is set to release in the fall of 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
