Just like the first Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead Redemption 2 features treasure maps that players can collect on their adventures that lead to especially valuable treasure. One of the earliest treasure maps Red Dead Redemption 2 players can get in the game is for the Poisonous Trail treasure, and here is how to follow it, find all the clues, and collect the reward.

Step 1: The Noblest of Men, and a Woman

Before players can get started on the Poisonous Trail treasure map hunt, they need to find the actual map itself. It's located in the northern section of the open world, at the frozen-over Cairn Lake. There's actually a Strangers side quest that will lead players to the exact location, so it's best to start that quest first.

The quest in question is called "The Noblest of Men, and a Woman," and it's given out by a down-on-his-luck writer attempting to write tales about old gunslingers. He can be found in one of the saloons in Valentine, and after having a quick chat with him, he will send Arthur out on a quest to interview some of the Old West's most notorious gunslingers.

There are four gunslingers in total that protagonist Arthur Morgan is asked to seek out, but the one of interest for the Poisonous Trail treasure map is Flaco Hernandez. The location of his camp will be marked on the map, so head there when ready, and be sure to bring some bullets.

Flaco's men are not thrilled to meet Arthur, and as tends to happen in Red Dead Redemption 2, a gunfight will break out. Kill all of Flaco's men, and then approach his cabin and call for him. This will lead to a duel between Flaco and Arthur. Win the duel (hint: Flaco tends to dive to Arthur's right), and then head into the cabin. Search underneath the bed in the corner to find a lockbox, which has the treasure map inside.

Step 2: Face Rock

The first map hints at an area of the world called Face Rock, which, unsurprisingly, is named after a rock formation in the shape of a face. On the world map, Face Rock can be found in Scarlett, a little to the east of "R" and "L" in Scarlett, northwest of Mattock Pond, and west of Ringneck Creek. If it's not already named on the world map, go explore the area to make things a little easier.

Upon arriving at Face Rock, players can follow the treasure map's visual clues to find a hollow tree that has the Poisonous Trail Map 2 inside. Anyone having trouble locating the tree should note that it's a small grey one, and its location on the world map is exactly in the middle of the "C" in "Face" and the "C" in "Rock."

Step 3: Poisonous Trail Map 3

Unfortunately, Poisonous Trail Map 3 isn't located in a named location on the map, which may make it a little more difficult to find. However, the most important clue of Poisonous Trail Map 2 is the snake figure, and that actually gives a pretty big clue as to where to find the next map.

The next map is located at a snake-shaped mound to the west of the Van Horn Trading Post, and northeast of Kamassa River. Upon reaching the snake mound, players need to check the pile of rocks in its center to find the map.

Step 4: Elysian Pool Waterfall

The final part of the Poisonous Trail treasure hunt is the easiest to follow, as players simply need to head to the waterfall where the Kamassa River feeds into the Elysian Pool. The Elysian Pool is located northwest of the Van Horn Trading Post, and upon arrival, players will be informed that it's the location of a legendary animal.

For now, though, the waterfall is what we're concerned about. In typical video game fashion, the waterfall is hiding a cave entrance. Equip the lantern and go through the cave. Navigating through the cave system can be a little tricky, but the first thing players should do is keep right, and drop off the ledge when first able to do so.

After dropping down, crouch and go through the small tunnel carved in the cave wall. Take a right at the end of the tunnel, and follow that path to the next chamber. Look to the left, run, and jump off the edge. If done properly, Arthur should land near a slope that leads to a shallow pool of water. Climb out of this water to find a pile of rocks, and search in the rocks to get four very valuable gold bars.
