The recent Denuvo leak has led to speculation that Red Dead Redemption 2 is coming to PC, despite no mention of the platform during the game's reveal trailer.

When Red Dead Redemption 2’s first trailer was revealed it did little to calm PC fans’ fears they may once again be left in the cold. While the PS4 and Xbox One logos were to be expected on the first footage, the lack of a PC indicator was a surprise and a disappointment. However, a recent leak might give those some gamers some hope that Red Dead Redemption 2 will come to the PC.

A little over a week ago, popular anti-tamper technology company Denuvo was hacked and numerous pieces of information were released online. Among those pieces of information was a list of developers that had either planned to use or are planning to use Denuvo as DRM protection. Most of the names on the list were to be expected, but a listing for Rockstar Games has now sent fans speculating.

Of course, it’s entirely possible that the Denuvo listing for Rockstar Games is tied to Grand Theft Auto 5, which released for the PC in 2015. In fact, there was a rumor early on that GTA 5 would use Denuvo since GTA 4 used it on PC, but Rockstar opted to stick with Steam’s DRM protection instead.

If the listing is not Grand Theft Auto 5 related then the aforementioned GTA 4 could be the reason, but the database seems more recent than that. Apparently, most of the other developers on the list used Denuvo within a few years.

There are several simple answers for why Rockstar Games appeared on the Denuvo protection list, but the one that most want is that a Red Dead Redemption 2 PC port is in the works. The first game missed the platform altogether, and was a major blow to gamers on the platform, but the hope is that Rockstar doesn’t repeat the same “mistake” for its sequel.

The good news is that Grand Theft Auto 5 has been very successful on PC thanks to a very active modding scene. It also doesn’t hurt that Grand Theft Auto Online has given players on all platforms a reason to come back to the experience on a regular basis.

It would make sense, then, that Rockstar would want to repeat as much of that same formula with Red Dead Redemption 2 – from the online multiplayer to the PC version. However, if that were the case then RDR 2 might release a year later for PC. But until Rockstar says anything more about Red Dead Redemption 2, which it hasn’t done for several months now, any news is just speculation.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is slated for a 2017 release.
