Open-world RPGs provide some of the best player-created stories in gaming. Expansive worlds filled with unique enemies and interesting places to discover often ensure that no two players will experience a hag-infested watery cave or an Italian fortress filled with guards the exact same way. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a sprawling depiction of the American west and gives players a chance to explore an open world as an outlaw with surprising historical accuracy. One Red Dead Redemption 2 player observed a rather poignant moment after clearing out a camp of O'Driscoll gang members.

Enemy camps are common places for open world RPG players to experience fun, personal encounters. From bandit camps in Skyrim to orc bases in Shadow of War, these areas are commonly filled with enemies and treasure and entice players to come and clean them out. The O'Driscoll gang, led by Colm O'Driscoll, inhabit different camp hideouts in Red Dead Redemption 2, and are no friends of protagonist Arthur Morgan. After one player attacked an O'Driscoll camp, he left one man alive, and this guy didn't know what to do with himself.

Reddit user Micah Bell posted a screenshot of this unfortunate lone survivor in Red Dead Redemption 2. Bell cleared out the entire camp but left this guy to his own devices. Apparently this last gang member didn't see Bell, and his AI brain didn't know what to do about a camp full of dead bodies and no one to fight. After searching for his gang's attacker, he reluctantly walked over to a cliff edge and probably thought pretty hard about his life choices.

Unfortunately, he didn't think hard enough. Bell mentions in a later post that shortly after this screenshot was taken, the final gang member spotted Bell and tried to beat him up with his bare fists. Bell might have felt some sympathy for the guy, so he hog tied him and tried to take him to the cursed town of Valentine. Naturally, the authorities in Valentine thought Bell had kidnapped the man and a firefight ensued. Whatever thoughts the surviving gang member had on that lonely cliffside didn't matter after a Valentine lawman accidentally ended him.

Though this gang member ultimately met his demise, it's hard to feel sorry for a guy who probably took part in the killings of several men, women, and children in the surrounding areas of Red Dead Redemption 2. Protagonist Arthur Morgan is not innocent either, but he does redeem himself in a few ways during the game. It's the complex characters of Red Dead Redemption 2 that really ground the game in realism and draw fans to keep playing it years after its release.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available for PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
