Red Dead Redemption 2 may be out for a couple of years now, but its vast open-world environment still offers new things for players to discover. It is without a doubt that the game contains tons of secrets and mysteries, and some RDR2 mysteries remain unsolved today.

Of course, Rockstar Games has a reputation of filling its games with all sorts of easter eggs in its video games, and Red Dead Redemption 2 is no exception. However, one particular easter egg in Red Dead Redemption 2 bears a striking resemblance to the Mount Chiliad mystery in GTA 5, which allows players to discover something that is just out of this world.

The Cult's Lair

The mystery begins in an abandoned hut north of Emerald Station. Upon entering the hut, players will find 10 or so corpses still lying in their beds. Just like most of Red Dead Redemption 2's mysteries, it is unknown how they all died, and it isn't even confirmed that this was a place of residence of a mysterious cult. However, it appears to be a mass suicide, and at the end of the room, players will find a corpse sitting on a table looking over the rest of the corpses. This gives the impression that whoever this person is must be the leader of this alleged cult.

Moreover, creepy music will start filling the room and a letter can be found near the cult leader labeled as Sermon that reads: "At the second hour under the half-moon. By the great love and grace of our savior Kuhkowaba. Voyager of time and galaxies, We cast off our corporal shells. So his vessel can take our spirits to the promised realm. To live in peace and power until the two-thousandth year. When we will return for the new chosen. And worship once again at the peak of Mount Shann. In his love, we rejoice always."

Apart from being described as the savior, not much is known about Kuhkowaba, but it is implied in the letter that this entity is not from this world. The note also mentioned "the second hour under the half-moon", suggesting that players should return to the hut at 2 AM. True enough, once the player returns inside the abandoned cabin at the specified time, the room will fill with a strange green light, and upon looking up at the broken ceiling, players will see an actual UFO hovering over the abandoned hut. The UFO will remain in the skies for approximately two hours, or until the player exits the hut where it will disappear into thin air.

So What Does Mount Shann Got To Do With It?

The end of the letter mentions Mount Shann as the place where "we will return for the new chosen", suggesting that players also visit the highest peak of Mount Shann. Similar to the abandoned hut, players must visit the mountain at 2 AM. To those unfamiliar, Mount Shann is a place in Red Dead Redemption 2, located in the Big Valley region of West Elizabeth territory northwest of Strawberry.

Upon reaching the mountain peak sometime between 1 AM to 4 AM, players will see another UFO. However, unlike the first one, this appears to be smaller in size. It is currently unclear what these UFOs are doing in Red Dead Redemption 2's world, but it appears that these extraterrestrial beings were able to come in contact with the cultists who ended up worshipping the aliens. However, it is still a mystery whether the aliens were behind the murder of the corpses found inside. Did they take the souls of the people living inside the cabin? Did they experiment on their bodies? Or did the cultists perform a mass suicide, hoping to reach wherever the aliens are from? All of these questions remained unanswered, leaving the Mount Shann mystery unsolved.

What About the Mysterious Sun Dial at Mount Shann?

the sundial on mount shann in Red Dead Redemption 2

At one of the peaks in Mount Shann, players will find a circle of rocks, which is pretty difficult to identify. However, the only reason players were able to identify it as a sundial is because of a description for it found in the official Red Dead Redemption 2 guide. Now, upon examining the sundial, players will notice several red arrows pointed at various directions away from the circle of rocks. Interestingly enough, one of these arrows is pointing towards the general direction of the hut where the corpses of the cultists are found.

However, the other arrows appear to point to nowhere, but following one of them would bring players to a location where players will find stones that can be collected as unique items. At the moment, it is still unclear if the sundial is connected to the UFO mystery, but it is likely given that one of the arrows points to the abandoned hut.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is out now for the PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
