There's no denying that Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the most successful "blockbuster" video games in recent history. Not only is it one of the biggest PC games in terms of file size, taking up approximately 150 GB of storage, it's also one of the most expensive titles ever developed. It was all worth it though, as Rockstar made one of the most realistic interpretations of the turn-of-the-century US. However, even in something as hugely lauded as this, there's always room for improvement.

That's what a group of modders has done recently. As spotted by PCGamesN, a new add-on for Red Dead Redemption 2 called "Vestigia" overhauls a lot of visual and environmental aspects of this enormous game. As described on the Nexus Mod page, users no12, DayL, WhyEm, and Majestic253 have essentially created four mods all rolled into one. Some of the features that the whole download comes with include a more "connected" weather system, in which transitions are more natural rather than jarring. It also implements better world flora, as well as changes in the AI of animals and humans. This also includes adding additional pedestrians to cities, with them being more likely to talk to one another.

This sounds like it's a fascinating way of making the game look and feel more realistic, not that the base experience doesn't feel grounded or look gorgeous as it is. As Red Dead Redemption 2 mods go, this one seems like it's a nice fine-tuning of the already pretty stellar title. If there's one caveat to "Vestigia," it's that it appears to have numerous unfixable conflicts between a bunch of other mods, so anyone wishing to download and try it should make themselves aware of any other add-ons that could cause issues.

With its superb writing, excellent character development, and a beautiful world that feels lived in, it's not surprising that many consider Red Dead Redemption 2 to be Rockstar's greatest game. The likes of GTA 5 may be more successful in terms of player base and overall sales, but the Western prequel is still amazing for those looking for a realistic open world experience.

As one of the highest-selling video games of the last decade, the story and character arc of Arthur Morgan has made a huge impact on the gaming world. Carrying on from the success that was its predecessor, it's held aloft as the height of open world gaming, and the fact that modders are willing to implement even more realism, shows just how much fans adore this 2018 entry.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
