Red Dead Redemption 2 is one very large game, featuring the largest map that Rockstar Games has ever created. But while a good many players will explore its version of the wild, wild west using the mini-map and quest markers, one very cool gameplay feature will give players another way to discover the world.

According to a Croatian games magazine called GAMEPLAY (the information has been translated), Red Dead Redemption 2 will give players the option to disable the mini-map. Once this has been done, the dialogue from NPCs will change as they will now give players directions, using routes and landmarks to tell players how to get to their destination.

Rockstar Games has yet to (publicly) show off this gameplay in action, but it is believable given the other conversations with NPCs that have been shown off so far. Red Dead Redemption 2 features a new dialogue system and protagonist Arthur Morgan is able to interact with NPCs including by threatening them (e.g holding them at gunpoint) or just saying hello as he passes by. There are also dynamic events featuring NPCs, with many previews of the game describing a scene in which a family is arguing as they build a house, only for the house to fall down.

Adventurous Red Dead Redemption 2 players will be delighted with the info. No doubt, some will want to give themselves an increased challenge, trying to get around the massive game world using context clues and NPC dialogue alone. It may also give them more of an excuse to explore at their own pace, ignoring directions that would be given by the mini-map in favor of getting lost and finding their way back.

But others will just be glad to see how much effort Rockstar has put into its world-building. Red Dead Redemption 2 also features meat that goes rotten after players have hunted animals and left the bodies out in the sun and mud that covers Arthur's clothing when he falls into it, and beard growth physics. In fact, a recent gameplay trailer showed that NPCs will react differently based on how unkempt and dirty Arthur looks.

It means that Red Dead Redemption 2 has a lot to see and a lot to do. While that means that some players won't even see half of it, for others, seeing as much as possible will be the ultimate objective.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is set to release on PS4 and Xbox One on October 26, 2018.
