Red Dead Redemption 2 is a game about detail. One of the true joys of the game is exploring and appreciating the craft of each location that sprawls across the west. It is because of this attention to detail that fans have started to notice a subtle shift slowly happening to a beloved character.

With Red Dead Redemption 2's detailed and living world nearing two years since launch, the game has had its fair share of updates. According to some players on social media, those updates are slowly morphing character John Marston's face.

Users posting on twitter and social media have shared their findings on how John Marston has received something of a face lift from the launch version. Polygon reports in detail about the mystery of Marston's new look by speaking to the user pushing the theory. According to player Trevor Cole, he has rebuked the updates primarily due to John's new mug.

Cole provides specific side-by-side comparisons between version 1.0 John and current John. Some fans have taken to the belief that John's change is to match protagonist Arthur Morgan. Cole explains that John's new body looks bulkier to match Arthur and that his hair has done the same shift. Cole has spent a lot of time and research to display the differences he and other players are noticing.

Although there might be a reason why more players did not notice any changes. Cole notes that the fist noticeable change was within the day-one patch most players downloaded. This means that while Cole continues to avoid the face changes, the majority players have already grown used to the "new" Marston.

If there was ever a face that would drive this level of fascination, it would be John Marston. Marston debuted in 2010's Red Dead Redemption which was Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar's take on the Old West. The open-world western is still lauded as one of the best games of the 2010s with Marston being considered one of the best protagonists of the last generation. Between a lovable character and a game that prides itself on even the minutia of video game worlds, it is no surprise that players are feeling strongly about the shift

The patches for Red Dead Redemption 2 are not solely for the single-player experience, but are also for the online component. Red Dead Online continues to draw in a set of dedicated players across platforms. Recently, the servers were shut down for two hours alongside those for Grand Theft Auto Online. This was in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. It was part of a growing campaign for organizations to go on a media blackout, much like Sony did by delaying its planned PlayStation 5 event.

So while some players may be chasing the authentic John Marston, they might want to hold out hope for that rumored remake to keep him the same.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
