Red Dead Redemption 2 released in the fall of last year to critical and commercial success. Praise was lauded on many aspects of the game, including its polish, its impressively gorgeous graphics, and its character and story writing. Another aspect of the game that was praised was the game’s scope and scale, largely in part due to the size of the game’s map.

For those unaware, Red Dead Redemption 2’s map contains nearly all of the original Red Dead Redemption’s map, though the full extent of this map can only be fully explored after the main story and epilogue are completed. Although nearly all of Red Dead Redemption’s map is in the game, a large piece of it is still missing: Mexico. However, some recent dataminers may have uncovered some very interesting models hidden within the game’s 1.00 patch for PS4.

A recent post on the GTAForums recently highlighted a series of models hidden within the game’s code in the latest patch on PS4. Poster VideoTechUK began his thread with a disclaimer saying, “Before proceeding to read, I would like to state this does not confirm any form of a future Mexico map expansion. This information is based on pure findings from the game files,” clarifying that this is all speculation.

He then goes on to thank two other users, Daemon and mariokart64n, for their assistance in extracting the models shown within the post. VideoTech then goes on to explain that while these models were disabled in-game, certain files contain familiar scenery like the town Chuparosa. It’s important to note that all of the disabled models are simple LOD models and are not fully detailed or textured.

After more digging through the game’s code, UI elements for Mexico were uncovered along with a model for a Mexican Army soldier and Bounty/Wanted level elements for Nuevo Paraiso. All of this evidence strongly suggests that at least a portion of the Mexico region from Red Dead Redemption’s campaign will make a return in some fashion. Rockstar is no stranger to working with or changing large stretches of the map, as recent dataminers found large snow textures for a possible upcoming holiday season event.

These datamines could possibly suggest a large-scale expansion sometime in the future, which could take players back to some familiar places. Now that the game has finally been released on PC, an abundance of new players are exploring everything the game has to offer, including some ridiculous Red Dead Redemption 2 mods.

With Red Dead Redemption 2’s recent release on PC getting an unsurprisingly warm reception from many gaming outlets, it seems that the game is continuously building momentum well after its launch. Hopefully players will have something grand to look forward to in the not-so-distant future.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Stadia.
